DC Skimmers and pumps

In my opinion they seem like a gimmick. Normally people buy skimmers to get the most powerful pump, not a pump that can be the most powerful and the weakest. Maybe I am missing where the DC is better then what is currently out there. There are no changes to how it skims just that you can control the pump's RPM. By the way Reef Octopus Diablo has DC skimmers too.

I will be following along, maybe someone else can share the benefits to them.

Well Klaus has been doing pretty well with the dc pumps for years with the red dragons. Advantages mostly low heat, quiet, reliable, low power draw, high effiency
I really see the value in having controllable dc pump for return and circulation pumps, as you can say run wide open when its daytime and dial it down for quietness at night etc. My sicci for my bubble master is getting replaced by the waveline 5000 dc pump , im hoping since its dc i can use the reef angel to really fine tune my skimmer, i love my skimmer but sometimes its finiky about adjustments.
since its dc it wont have the option to spin backwards and make me reach in and manually start the meshwheel spinning...

Thank you for the input, the pump I am looking at is the wave -line 5000. I have found on my 45g reef that I am always turning my mag 7 off as well as my skimmer when its time to feed by pulling out the plugs. Also heat is a factor, my mag 7 really does give off lots of heat and eats up 93 watts of energy compared to 30 or so on the wave- line. I know that the RO Diablo comes with and without the DC motor, the one with the DC is way more expensive then the Skimz or the Reef Life Support. Dave why did you decide on the Skimz?

Talking with aquacave and seeing the build quality i went with the leopard sl183 this skimmer is great. No overflows set it once and it pulls half a cup of crap in two days. Great to be able to go in to aquacave and look at and talk about products.

I've been looking into the DC as well to replace my ASM G4xx. Would like to hear people's opinions on this. I figure anything has got to be quieter then my ASM.

If you call them you can pick your stuff up. Great people to deal with, always has time to help. Not really a showroom but does have most on display

I not using a dc pump for a skimmer but I am using the speed wave 5000 for a return pump same as the wave -line 5000 or the Diablo all the same pump. They are super quite you can not hear it run at all. As far as adding heat to the tank they run cool no change in temperature in my tank .As for using dc pumps on a skimmer I know a couple of reefer using them and are very happy with the pumps. I am going to replace my skimmer pump soon with the speed wave 5000 dc pump

I picked up the reef octopus dc from Sho tank, I absolutely love it. The DC pump just gives you a little more control, don't get me wrong I was able to control my wet/dry skimmate with just the release valve on the old skimmer this just makes it easier to dial it in. I was wet skimming in 24 hrs, no break in time.

Good morning all, so I placed my order today....2 Razor 120 16k w connector bar, RO Diablo DC 170 skimmer, RO Diablo DC 3500 pump and Coral Vue 500w heater, I got a very good deal from Steve at Sea Shor in Buffalo Grove. My sump from Anthony at Nano Sea Creations will be ready tomorrow. Yesterday I ordered my first piece of ART for the aquascaping from http://cerameco.com/gallery/vida-rock-standard-shapes/arch-3/.
