does anyone have LEDS on a 36" tall tank

My mixed reef tank is 96" x 30" 36" tall and I want to eventually switch over to LEDS. Any suggestions on what to use and or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
 
I have a 30 inch tall tank, I just recently got my Orphek PR 156, on for 2 days now. It's super bright and it's made for deep tanks. It's too early to tell you how my tanks responds to it yet. I have the fixture 40" from the sandbed.
 
I just ordered a 50 3W LED unit for my 29gl biocube. I am getting it delivered this week. I paid about $200 for the unit. Comes with two or three fans built into it to keep the LED's cool, drivers, and it's own timer.

50 3W LED? Not CREE I hope as you will bleach each and every thing in that small tank with that much light.
 
ask bill at reefledlight.com, and he will probably tell you just to use optics on a tank that high, with a little more power than the norm.

They are not cree, but I was told they have a higher par reading than cree. They are supposed to be dimmable so I am hoping I can control the intensity and over a month and figure out the right setting. I guess if I bleach everything I have an excuse to get a bigger tank, but I am hoping I can make it work by using a dimmer and placing it higher above the tank. They are 90 degrees, which I think means the light is disbursed more over an area vs. focused on a small spot, but I really don’t know.

What diodes were specified to you as having higher PAR ratings then CREE?

Yeah, that does seem a bit much for that small of a tank. Basically, that represents 1 cree LED per approximately 7 square inches of surface area.

I am running about 1 cree LED per 13.5 square inches of surface area. 96 LEDs over 3'x3' tank 27 inches deep.

Mine are slightly dimmed down, and raised up and its still plenty of light.

I think its doable, just don't drop them right on top of the water at 100% otherwise you will have problems. LED acclimation is really important.

With that many diodes running over a tiny tank like that you would have to have extremely narrow optics even at a fixture height of 12"+ which will point intensity right at the corals. If the drivers are dimmable I would assume you will be running them close to 3v or less at all times.
 
How did you guys acclimate to LED's, which just seem alot brighter than my hallides? I'm currently doing the window screen layers over my tank and peel off layer per few days. Orphek doesn't allow dimming of their LED's.

I run the system on an aquacontroller which allows me to dim the LEDs through an additional module.

I put them down to 50% white & blue to start and slowly brought them up to 100% blue 65% white with the lights 12" above the water.
 
I am by far no light expert and know no more than then few hours I have spent readings and searching on the internet and I couldn't tell you how par is computed, but to clarify above, i was comparing 20 cree LED's to this unit with 50 led's. The manufacturer, which makes both units, told me the 50 led unit had a higher par reading. I don't know if PAR is driven by the number of individual lights or if it's a spectrum measurement. I haven't received the unit yet, I should have in two or three days. When I get it I will see who makes the LED's. I know they use Cree, Epistar, and Bluelux or something. It could be these or something different. I have no idea. I felt the price was good at about $200 including shipping compared to what else I could find, so I rolled the dice and went with it. It was similar in price to the cree unit they were selling so I am hoping for similar quality.

I do know they are 90 degree optics, but by narrow optics are you saying I should have a lower degree, like 30? These LED acclimation post have me worried now. Hopefully I don't kill everything.
 
I bought my unit from Eshine. It's a manufacturer in China. They assemble and put them all together. I was going to try to make one myself, but they can do it cheaper and better. Like I mentioned, I don't have them yet, but everything I looked at or tried to find about them came back ok. They sell their Cree units through starkled.com, but they mark them way up. They have the price sheets on their website. They have a distribution agreement on certain cree units, but I don't know if that pertains to all units or just select ones. I was only looking at the smaller LED's.

I do have a DHL tracking number so hopefully there is more than air in the box when I get it. I'll let you know if it comes empty. I figured for $200 it was worth a gamble. If it doesn't work, I have new light for my garage.

There is a 12 hour time difference, but they actually have online representatives who are on right now. Maybe you are better negotiator than me and can get them to sell you one. It's like $400 or something at Stark. I only emailed them, I never tried the online stuff.
Also, I have not received my order yet, nor is my item number of the website, but per DHL it getting ready to be put on a plane.

I brought these items up so I just want to state that you should proceed with caution. I don't know what I am doing so don't take my advice. I am just sharing what I did, and in the end it may be a bad roll, but I figured it was worth a shot for the price.

there is no way for 200 bucks and 50 leds that you will be happy with it. I'm very curious about which one you get because I've been resarching leds for 7months now and I think I know what you bought.
