Just wanted to share this extremely frustrating experience with a melanarus wrasse I've been trying to catch for what seems like forever.
I picked up a melarnarus a few months ago because I found a monti eating nudi on one of my montis that wasn't doing too well. I figured I would have a fish that would earn it's keep!
After a couple months I noticed that the wrasse would start bullying my candy hog. I wasn't real bad, just kind of asserting it's position in the tank.
Recently, I noticed my maxima clam trio which have remained in the same location since I added them to the tank, had all moved. So I started closely watching why. Then I saw it, the mel started to flip the clams over and proceed to try and eat their foot! He also continually nipped at the mantles as well.
So Jeff helped me out by picking up the fish trap for me. Thank you so much Jeff!!! The trap is the aquamedic large model. I have an algae mag and the trick is to position the algae mag on the back of the fish trap, since that's the flattest part of the trap and it is mostly flat against the glass.
I added the trap last Friday evening to let the fish get accustomed to it. So then the process of baiting and waiting commenced. Saturday went by, then Sunday and no luck. As each day went by I kept losing patience and hope. Every other fish would go in the trap, chill out, have a beer lol, etc. All except the dang fish I want to catch. He almost knew something was up. He would swim by the trap, then swim away, taunting me the whole time. I'm sure it wasn't taunting me but that's what it felt like lmao!
Well anyway, roughly 20 minutes ago I was going to go to bed and my plan was to starve them tonight, then tomorrow night try again. I noticed that there were a few mysis chilling in the feeder tube still so I shook it inside the trap and figured what the hell.
Well the fish go nuts and all of a sudden, the mel goes into the trap!!! I pulled the line so hard it shot out of the water lol!
Well, take it from a person who gets extremely bored while fishing, I have very little patience to sit there and try to trap a fish. Eventually, even the most difficult fish will get hungry enough to go into the trap.
Quick review of the actual trap:
The trap size is a bit smaller than your average shoe box, is made of plastic, and has a glass sliding door with a latch attached to fishing line. There is also a glass bottom piece you can use which helps weigh down the trap. If you're going to use the algae mag, I wouldn't add the glass bottom to it.
There's also a round tube that you insert into the top of the trap, this is where you would place the "bait".
There are so many ways you can get the fish to go in it's pretty much your choice. Aside from the baiting method, you could also use their favorite live prey item in a glass jar. So for a mel, one other method I was going to use if the baiting failed was to get a small crab and poke some holes into the top of a jar, and leave the jar inside the trap. Another method I was going to use is a mirror in the back of the trap.
So hopefully this review and experience will be able to help others who may have that one fish they would like to punch in the face lol! Well not literally but you know what I mean.
