Frag Tank Advice

I'm in the process of setting up a frag tank. I'm planning on a 24x24x8 tank.

I'm planning on keeping Zoas/Palys and possibly some LPS. I was going to keep the tank BB so I figured I'd also run a sump with a fuge. My question is, because its mostly zoas do I need a protein skimmer? I have a Reef Octopus 150 laying around but even with a sump I'm thinking its going to be around 50gal total volume. Would the 150 be way too much? If so, what may be a better option?

no need to overskim when you don't have fish. will still need a skimmer because you should be feeding those LPS frequently to make them grow and multiply. but like mark said, no need to skim all the time.

If you have way over sized skimmer for the size of your tank,it will not be efficient at all and barely produce any skimmate, unless you have very heavy bioload.

For a 50 to 60gallon system would the 150 be way over-sized? I'm not opposed to have a few cool fish in the frag tank. Increasing the bio-load is not a problem, but still curious if this is too much skimming.

Would it be better to have something more around the 100G size and run it 24/7 vs having something in the 150G size running periodically. I'm new to the skimmer game so thought I'd see everyone's opinions.

Yes it's a bit too big,but i would just run it 2days a week to pull some gunk out and also allow time for gunk to build assuming you will fed the zoas?

I've had the best luck using a skimmer that was about 25% larger than what my tank size is. 50 = 75, 100=125, 150= 200, I know the math isn't perfect but it has worked really well for me.
