Freshwater Coral?

This past weekend I went to Wisconsin Dells and while kayaking in a lake I ran into something that blew my mind. I literally thought it was a new animal. It looked like a coral as you would see in the ocean, but it was in a lake! Does anyone know what it is? Thank you!

Got to be some kind of larvae or eggs of some type

That's what I thought as well, but that thing was huge ( 1.5 feet across). As far as I could see it didn't have anything inside such as eggs.
