Craigslist currently has 600+ generators for sale in the Chicago area. Now is your chance to prevent losing fish in the future if a power outage was to happen!
 
Does anyone know anything about generators? What would a good size one to buy? My tank and the refrigerator are the only things I'm really concerned with running. We have a small 2 bedroom condo.

Just total up the number of watts you need. Don't forget the surge watt, the generator has to be able to hand the surge watt requirement of the appliance. For example, a refrigerator might only need 700 watts to operate, but to get it started, will need a surge watt of 2000. Your generator has to be able to produce that. I bought a 5000 watt generator and it runs 2 refrigerators and 2 aquariums.
 
I bought an 1800 watt hand held gas generator that will run my entire 150 gallon setup.

Depending on the size, the Honda's are really nice for the small ones. But crazy pricey. Almost silent when running.
