GFO vs Biopellets

+1 for GFO, -1 for pellets. IME, they strip the water too quickly and I experienced some bleaching from them. In addition, many people, including myself, have had increased cyano from the pellets. I'll never try them again.

You could be using them wrong. Too many pellets, or tumbling too much will cause an excess of bacteria leading to the issues listed. You should try again, use less pellets, and try a newer reactor designed for pellets to get them tumbling just right. I couldn't be happier with biopellets, and coupled with GFO makes a great pair for nutrient control. I love being able to overfeed without worrying about it.

George, how long have you been running the BPs?

Oh..and the chaeto arrive this mmorning.

Been running just over 3 months now, nearly a month at 100% recommended quantity. Tank is doing fantastic, corals have gained color, palys have taken off growing like crazy. I have my hydra reactor running just enough to get the bottom most layer of pellets fluidized. I only saw one small patch of cyano start up when I was at 2/3 total pellets, in a very low flow area, but a few days of mb7 dosing cleared it right up and never came back.

I wanted to do a full on zeovit system, but its just too risky. Plus its a ton of work and you cant miss a day of dosing because of everything it strips from the water.
Just dont have the time to run it properly right now. I am going to stick with standard biofuel/vit c dosing for now. A lot more control incase something starts going wrong.

I do want to start dosing some zeo products in my tank because of the positive reviews. But theres just so many different ones and im not sure how would the work on a nonzeo ulns system. Still have to do research on that when i have time, dont really know which to buy yet.

Why do so many people knock any type of carbon dosing? It is a proven and effective method, IF you do it slowly and know when to maintain the correct dosage...on top of that just like everything else in the hobby any good happens slowly, every time I read a my tank crashed thread from carbon dosing it is because they started too fast instead of doing things properly. As far as cyano....again if you got cyano and stopped then you didn't do proper research because it is always noted than doing carbon in many cases causes it temporarily.

Any type of carbon dosing is safe, if you fully research it, run the correct equipment and accept that you may just piss off your corals temporarily from the nutrient levels falling. Even then if you are paranoid ramp up even slower than what is reccommended.

It's called an autodoser.

I have a non-ulns system, but it is pretty low. I does 1mm of Phols xtra daily (on auto doser), and coral snow once a week (turn off carbon reactor until its all skimmed out). I have noticed deeper colors in some of my acros.

Mythbusters tested this out. Even eating tons of poprocks (like a whole box) and then downing liters of Pepsi, the absolute worst thing is that you get an upset stomach for a while. And probably throw up lol.
But stomach exploding or you dying? Nope. :)

Yah I was going to do xtra, b-balance, amino, and one other (forgot). Still have to do research.

curious to see how b-balance works out. I would not use aminos if you do not have a non-ulns. This stuff is very concentrated and you can overload the system with organics too easy. If you do use it with caution.

I bought some FUEL but have yet to drop any in my tank.

So it's settled then, nems don't have any preference whether you dose or not! LOL
