Help me with my dying zoas?

:( it is! It's amazing how much really goes into taking care of a reef, and all the little variables that pop up to deal with. Maybe I'll catch some critter in the act once I get a red search light :)

Erik, do you have a light in your sump/fuge? Maybe you could try rehoming one of the damaged zoas there to see if it recovers. That might be a good way to tell if someing in your DT is preying on them or if it is a param issue or something else.

and also if you are sure there are that many pods and if your tank is big enough .. why not get a mandarin goby ..

they are cool to watch and go nom nom on pods ?

I was going to recommend a precision thermometer. They can be used to calibrate your other thermometers, but vwrlabshop is no more and vwr does not carry them at economical prices. Ebay might have them, but risky for precision tools.

Make sure you guys use 2 controllers for titanium heaters that dont have built in controllers. You only need 1 controller if the heater already has a built in controller.
I had another JBJ controller malfunction on me a few weeks ago and was reading temp in the 70's. My SPS and zoas started to look sick and water felt warm. I used a different thermometer and temp read 88. So the titanium heater kept heating the water. I have had 2 JBJ controller malfunction on me, so I will never buy that again. I will also use 2 heater controllers from now on to be safer. I lost a few zoas and a few SPS. All LPS were unaffected.

Hmm, good call on the thermometers... and I keep putting off buying a controller... I have spare thermometers even, lol, I'll throw a 2nd in another part of the tank.

I do have a light in my Sump - not a powerful one, but it should be ok for the time being. I do know I have asterinas down there though, well, one at least (and where there's one....). At this point its worth a shot - that first frag is a goner just sitting up there, may as well see if moving it helps at all. I will probably also relocate the other frags to see how it goes.

As for the pod control - I've been QTing my DT for the past 2 months due to crypto! :( I would love a beautiful mandarin, but I will be going with some fun wrasse first :) In fact, my first purchase, well... 2nd purchase after my failed QT-tank, will be a melanarus wrasse! I'm definitely looking forward to that next weekend!

The 3 frags I moved to my sump seem to be ok - at least they aren't covered in pods when I check up on them in the mornings / evenings. They haven't shrunk in size since I moved them, and they seem to be opening up - so I'm not sure what was plowing through them up top. Curious that the pods swarm them up in the main tank, and not in the sump, where tons of pods live as well. It does seem like some type of predator though, so I'm still not sure what I will do with these frags. I may stabilize them, and then just give them away :( unless I can figure out what is preying on them in my main tank.
