Soooo....I'm hoping someone here has dealt with these guys and give me the answer that Google couldn't... One thread you read says you might as well cook your rocks, while the next says they will disappear in a few months, I guess essentially starving. Doesn't seem to be many predators for it either, some suggest emerald crabs...
I am not sure what got them started in my tank, have been pretty religious with frag drips, etc. Bottom line is I noticed them in a few areas while my tank was fallow and at that time (2 months worth) I was only feeding the corals and my BTA's and I didn't even really pay much attention to them as I assumed they were worms of some sort and there were only a few. I then started noticing more and more and now it seems like a problem, with dozens of them throughout the rock and sand bed, pretty much anything they can attach to.
They look like hairs, sweeping around and they are touching some of my frags, but the frags do not seem to be affected, as some folks have suggested in various reads on the innerwebz. They are not the hydroids that form colonies, they are just randomly attaching on the rocks, etc.
I "borrowed" this image off a random site, because I would like folks to know exactly the type I'm referring to:

Since I am about to move and I will be breaking down the tank and setting it back up in Michigan, I was thinking of just killing the rock, which i hate to do...most of it is dryrock to begin with, 90% of it, but it's starting to load up with stomatella snails, pods and FINALLY coralline. I know I will likely lose some coralline, but has anyone dealt with these and found that they do simply die off after a few months or should I just start over with the rock?
At this point it's mostly just the unsightliness, as I do not see any adverse affects with coral stinging or anything, but if they continue to multiply at the rate they seem to be now, I could be in trouble... Anyone with experience on these guys, please chime in! Thanks!
