Keeping 1,000 hermits alive

If you don't keep them fed and don't have tons of bigger empty shells they are just going to kill themselves

Hopefully, the bin is as big as possible. In a small container, it is a matter of aeration and the ammonia spike. So, that means an airstone and water changes. They can probably go for weeks with minimal food.

When I was a child, I was able to take home a couple of handfuls of hermits and a dozen starfish in a gallon tin can with enough water to just keep them submerged. Then, I took a 6 hour drive home in 80 degree weather no AC. When I got home, the smell of ammonia was incredible. Most of the hermits survived. All the starfish survived ( for a few weeks at least) because I had no idea how to feed them. Don't go PETA on me. I was practically a toddler and my parents had no idea how much loot I had.

Obviously, I had a saltwater tank to put them in. But, that's another story.
