LED Recommendations

If you are going SPS dominant, definitely run GFO to keep those phosphates at 0. ALL reefs should run carbon, it leaves the water crystal clear and removes that fishy smell (amongst many other benefits)

I would recommend talking to BamBam about reactors. He thinks he has figured out the perfect setup. I am running the dual you posted, with luck, but he tried it and didnt like it. He has been bouncing around between several setups and I think he finally found one he is happy with.

All BamBam if you reading this could you post because for some reason when i search I can't find any posts from you lol

LOL!! Go with 2xTLF with one MJ1200 to run GFO and carbon... Keep in mind that the carbon will tumble also. I know some say NO NO to this. But I have done this with no issues.. Controlling the GFO will control the carbon also. When I was using the BRS dual and changed the carbon was a bad smell to me. Never had this smell with TLF reactor. But this is JMO

Now for BP will depend which reactor to use depending on size of BP.. I was using TLF for my BRS BP and was ok.. Than I tryied the BRS BP reactor with a mag 5 and so far very happy with the performance.

Hope this info will help you :D

Could you possibly dumb it down to someone who doesn't know at all about the whole GFO and Carbon thing cause this just pretty much went right over my head and also a link to the reactor your talking about.

You should be good to go.. But the BRS dual will also do the same.. Just not to my liking ;)

Alrite and lastly what do you mean by BP and the whole last paragraph???

What type of Media do you recommend?

If you can afford the prices go with the best. But I usually go what I can afford which is cheap. Look at the BRS videos explaining the difference for each one. Just keep inmind that the cheap will have to be replaced more offten than the top $$ one.

I will not try Bio Pellets unitl you do your research 1st.. You will see more bad than good when using this product. Above comment was regarding BRS BP reactor performance...

LED definitely is the way of the future for the hobby no doubt. But at this time, without going DIY or dumping tons of money into overpriced fixtures with a wider spectrum of diodes for a better range of color output (i.e. more than just cool whites and royal blues), it is still lacking.

Lets face the fact here, to get great coverage over the tank in question, what few retail options there are that are considered "current" generation technology, you still need at least 2 of them to get good coverage, this is hardly cost effective to justify LED on a budget. For a fraction of up-front cost, and a year to buy yourself time to see where LED goes in the next 10-12 months by the time you need new bulbs, you can buy a quality fixture and bulbs for either MH or T5, and they will both work great for that first year.

Now, if you want to talk DIY, I would be more than happy to help you out with putting together a really nice package on a budget, and even willing to help walk you thru the build. You would get exactly what you want, wouldn't overpay for a name brand, and can have bragging rites that yea, you built it!

I actually might just go with a combination of the T5 and MH cause its better to have something that is known to be good rather than spending a **** ton of money into something that is just getting out there. So if you can link a good MH and T5 fixture I'll prob end up doing that in the end but also what bulbs i should be running would help

Most people prefer the Phoenix 14k or Radium 20k for MH, with actinics for supplement. There are about as many opinions on the best arrangement of bulbs for mh/t5 combos as there are different tanks out there running that kind of setup. One arrangement that looks REALLY good to me a member here runs, is the Radium MH with two VHO actinics (T12 bulbs) and the colors in his tank are absolutely amazing.

@ LIL BAM BAM
Could I see a picture of the way you set up two reactors with one pump! I have thought about doing that but could not figure out a way to arrange the reactors.

All right but for example how would i get the combination of the MH and T12? Also that would be the only lighting correct? Also running that combo and between T5 and MH is there much of a difference between the two that is really noticeable?

Left is my GFO and right carbon.. Keep in mind you will need a valve to control flow..

Here is a picture

If you want a proven combo, stick with MH/T5.If you're willing to try led's,make sure the person helping you or giving you advice has plenty of ''hands-on'' experience.I've built over a dozen led kits for guys here and on reefcentral and they are still going strong, all in the past 2yrs.So after 2yrs the led's are still going strong,i see no adverse issues with corals or equipment.
PM Markitekt,he is in Des plaines and has a 120g tank with 2MH's and 2 pc's.His tank is show worthy.

Good luck on your choice.

hey fish beard, how much do you think an led diy system will cost for a tank that is 48L X 24W X 30T, i would want to have sps, lps and clams. it will be built into a canopy. Thanks. also do you think it would be hard to set up, because i have no experience, but i have soldering iron.
