So today we conducted a test over Markitekt's Tank of the month tank with our SPS-55 units versus his 400watt halides.

I will show side-by-side pics of FTS and individual corals to show individual results aswell.

Current setup consists of 2-400watt halides with Lumenarch 20''x20'' reflectors. 4inches above water
HQI ballasts overdriving the bulbs 30%
2-VHO 110watt bulbs for actinics

----Total wattage draw is 1,180watts

PAR results: 1'' under water=445 6'' under water=420 12'' under water=300 sandbed=135

LED test:

For the led comparison,we hung 2- SPS-55 units 12'' above the water

SPS-55 units have 52leds driven at 680ma(3leds are moonlights)
Dual spread optics 60&90degrees in one.

----------Total wattage draw is 256watts

PAR results: 1'' under water=830 6'' under water=610 12'' under water=310 sandbed=130

Let's start with a FTS:

What do you guys think?
Fair comparison?

Like it wish you had them when I needed it a few weeks ago, maybe I'll be swapping my ai sol sooner than I thought.

It looks great way better colors, But in all honesty the lack light penetration is kinda hindering the full potential. Other than that its awesome. Maybe do a mh/led mix fixture? That would be a first. And im sure it would rock the pants of any other fixture!

Fixtures were 12'' above the water, penetration would be much greater at 4'' above the water, but might not be a good idea to have 1400PAR up top and 320 on sandbed.

Those LEDs have awesome color and Par at only 256W. Great Job Gus! When are you coming by to check out the new light fixture? Text me.

Haha i get what you mean! But truely a great job man!! Ill probs get one for this half cylinder tank im lookin at. Just waitin for it(the tank) to go on sale

These are the entry-level LED units. There will be more powerful and higher output units coming very, very soon. Thabks for the Positive feedback.

Are we going to keep updating this thread? I would like to see results after 2 months or updates every week if possible.. Have been to his house a few times and will revisit once again. His tank will be an excellent choice to show LEDS will grow SPS....

But the comparison is great for sure.. Great job Gus on the LEDS :thumbup:

Great job Gus.Everything look great under your LEDs, I wish I was there in person.Keep the updates coming, would like to see how the corals respond after few weeks.

Looking forward to picking up my SPS-55 tomorrow. Question (probably dumb) - if they are kept at lower light intensity does it use less power? I'd be surprised if I get to 50% intensity on my 20"x20"x10" frag tank ;)

And holy crap, I just read that again and saw you compared the unit to 400W MH. Now those are some powerful LEDs!

The PAR is great and low energy consumption. I like the colors oh the MH though. The LED looks too red.

There's one mistake in the OP. My halides are actually 18" above the tank. The bottom of my canopy is 4" off the tank. If I lowered the bulbs to 4" above water, I'd boil the water, but would prolly get unbeatable PAR readings. This is to say that LED's are exceptional performers when it comes to keeping cool. We had these running over my tank for about an hour, and the LED fixtures were barely warm to the touch. I've seen plenty of LED tanks, and never seen an LED system light up a tank this well. I will most likely be permanently switching to LED's after seeing the potential with Gus's systems. I'm running a Prestige LED long-term test fixture over my frag tank. My display tank will continue to run the current MH setup, until I save up cash for enough Prestige LED units to please my coral obsession. Prestige LED SPS test progress will be posted.

True!

I know Gus and I am sure his products are tailored for us Reefers. This is what I think when I see LED test. When was the last time Mark changed his MH bulbs? Something as simple as that could explain the color shift. Also later on in this thread Mark explains that his lamps are acutally a little higher that posted and that the canopy is lower. True lowering the lamps would add in the overall heat transfered to his display. I trust Gus! I know he has our backs, I just have a hard time beliveing that LED's are the magic answer to Reef lighting. IMO

Only long-term testing will give me the answer on my units,No doubt leds will become the standard. The main point of this test was to show that with only 2.12 amps of current draw it does an incredible job of lighting the same tank that was lit by 11.4 amps of current draw.

Mark is a Firm Metal halide follower,at this point and time we will be working to give him as close to a replica of his overall Metal Halide look over his tank as possible while saving him electrical costs.

We will be testing the NEPTUNE units very shortly.

Great. I just picked up my SPS-55 at Gus' place, and saw one in action above his cube. It looked great! The optics are fantastic, no spotlighting at all. Seems to provide the even spread of T5s, with the benefits of shimmer like MH. This is without a doubt the best you can buy for the money. Can't wait to get it running on my frags tank to compare difference in coloration and growth between my DT with ATI T5s. Gus knows what he's doing! Try to find another fixture at this price point with superior optics, UV, green, red, blue and white LEDs, and a controller built in!
