I'm in need of some new lights and came across a couple who have had some good reviews/success but wanted to see what you guys have to say or if you have used them your options please.

First one is the more common one, the "EverGrow IT2040 Led Programmable Reef Tank Light "

Second is far cheaper and has up to 18000k vs the other more expensive which goes only to 12000k. " Evergrow Full Spectrum D120 165W WIFI LED Light "

Check out ocean revive lights. Couple guys on here have bought them and been very happy with them and they are not bad priced at all

Those OR T247 are looking like the one's I may go for... The wifi/app for custom settings did seem neat but not necessary and probably more of a gimmick.

What about the units with the sunrise to sunset effects? That seemed like a good option to have...

I personally like sunrise/sunset(programmable). That's what I have on my coral compulsion leds. I feel it simulates a more natural light cycle. Moonlights on the other hand I feel more of a personal choice. I like them but I don't believe they have any actual affect on the livestock.

So am I just a fool to buy into the Radions? It seems like the other options are just so cheap it may be worth looking in to further. Other than the cost difference, what is the main advantage to go on the cheap?

No you're not a fool. If I could afford 3 radions that's what I would have over my 125 but imo the IT2040 series and all of its clones meet all necessary requirements for LED lighting for reef tanks.

3W brand name diodes
Proper color spectrum
Optics
Dimmable/programmable

It's the same as Vortech pumps you don't NEED them and many successful reefs have been kept with powerheads they both move water but Vortechs have more controlability features and style. So we pay more for them if that's what we value.

Would the T247's be able to be programmed to function as sunrise/sunset by adjusting the power output(percentage)at certain times to reflect a natural cycle vs just on/off"?

Well, if you want stand next to you tank and change the light intensity all day long. You can adjust the intensity, but it is done manually. The timers just do on/off for the two channels. What I did was put four white leds in the blue channel and put those four blues in the white channel. This way my blue channel isn't totally blue and my white channel isn't really white. I have the whit channel turn on about an hour before the blues and have the blues turn off about two hours after the whites. It's a poor man's sunrise/sunset.

I've had the IT Evergrows and the T247s. I like the 247s better because they are wider and get better coverage front to back. I don't really miss the sunrise/sunset.

If budget is an issue check out a seller marshydro on eBay. Many of those on RC love his lights. I can't post the link for some reason

I would order cree leds from of rapid led. I have had my take run on as low as 7 3w leds before and kept my sps and clam alive and thriving. I see lots of people spending 300 dollars on radions or other expensive lighting than only run it at 50%. Or the oposit where they have to run three units over a tank. I never understood why someone would by top of the line lighting than run it at 50%. Leds are rated to last 50,000 hours. So If it's to conserve on the life I don't get that either. I see it as running 1000w mh than putting screen on top of your tank because there to bright why not just get 250w or 400w. So I like cree. And rapids calculator it a major over estimation. I assume to sell more leds.
