I know reefwise gets them in all the time. Anyone who got one from reefwise, reef imports, ect...how is yours doing? where do you recommend i go? is yours eating and how long have you had it?

tagging along... I'd love to add one. They're listed 'with caution'

"It is compatible with most fish and larger invertebrates, but should not be kept with any polyps or corals, which it will eat. Small invertebrates may be threatened as well."

From those that have them, are they like angels in a reef 50/50 shot?

I know Gus had one and he said he never had a problem with his corals. From my experience with angels(which where all "50/50") not one of them ever bothered any corals. Im willing to risk it for a moorish though.

I see reefwise getting these in all the time and there always sold by the time i can get them. No one here is one of those people who got one?????

Ed, If you happen to have kept one and dont mind posting your experiences here, that would be great. I am strongly considering one for my 120g (sry brett not trying to thread-rob, been wanting one for a while)

I know Pringles had 2, he said his regal killed one right away... He pulled regal out and was gonna reintroduce.. Moorish looked good though... They can br mean to semi-aggressive fish too. Gus's right away put the borb on check.

I know the MI's are sort of their own class, but are they grouped with Angels? LA sells them grouped in with their Tangs ...?

It is the only member of the family Zanclidae, and a very close relative of the Tangs or Surgeonfish. One of the most widespread fish, it can be found throughout the Indian Ocean, Red Sea, and all of the tropical Pacific. Wild specimens can attain a length of 7 inches, but 4 inches is more likely in the aquarium. The Moorish Idol tends to be very peaceful. Due to its size, schooling nature, and need for swimming space, it requires a large aquarium of at least 125 gallons.

I got one from xzotic and it was eating right off the bat really well. I ended up selling it a couple weeks later because it wouldn't leave my clam alone. Didn't touch any of my zoas, sps, lps, or softies.

No problem, I've had my moorish idol for 4 yrs almost, which is almost unheard of of what I've read online.
The biggest problem is to get them to eat at first because they are stresed very easily and never really want to eat, plus thier mouths are so small when they are juviniles.
The best thing to get them to eat at first is tiny spectrum pellets or frozen mysis, of coarse thawed out and soaked in some garlic or vita-chem. This will also help building their immune systems throughout their life span.
Eventually they should eat nori/seaweed all the time.
Now for the biggest downfall. Most people try to cram this fish in a tank with too many other fish in a tank they think is BIG enough. I'd say no smaller than a 125 gallon but limited on how many other fish are already in there.
Don't ever put a Moorish idol in a tank with any type of trigger. Thier streamers are biten off all the time from the dangling and waiving in the water, this also stresses out the fish.
I would recommend once the moorish idol is eating then try some krill that's been soaked as well.
I hope this might help you out if you get one.

Most people don't know that they get very aggressive toward other moorsih idols as they become adults, even kill each other.
They think it's cool to school but reality is thier not in the ocean where they can get away if needed.

I always say mine is the holy grail of all the fish in my tank not because it's the most expensive but the most impossible to keep in captivity.
So feed well with a variety of foods to ge them to eat and he should be good for years down the road.
I lost 2 moorish idols before this one, which was a very big let down and I swore after the two I wasn't going to try another one but I did and is he living well and healthy.

They are more closely related to tangs than anything. My first moorish never touched my LPS and clams. My 2nd one I just have it in my FOWLR now (Gus' Moorish)
