Mixing Pufferfish with other Fish

I have seen several questions here about mixing puffers with other fish, especially lionfish. Here is a sad post I just read on my forum:
I had a very sad day yesterday....
My Porky Puffer of 3+ years died.
Cause of death?

They were both happily eating some food when my Foxface took a bite and then pulled back, just barely clipping my puff with his spines.
Problem was, it was very near puff's gills. He immediately started twitching and freaking out, then puffed up really big.
He was clearly at least partially paralyzed, he was just drifting around the tank slowly deflating, seemed barely able to swim.
After a while he rested on the bottom, still breathing and just sat there....
Next morning he was in the same spot, but had stopped breathing.
Even after he died he still had that big smile on his face.

That was very depressing, and even today I'm still bummed out.
I ended up catching the Foxface (which is huge, I've had him for about 5 years) and took him into a local store.
They were very impressed with him and I got a coupon for a big discount on my next fish purchase....
Which will be another little Porky Puff, once they get my order in stock.

Dont let this happen to you. Dont mix rabbitfish & puffers. They get along great and never fight, but all it takes is 1 freak accident and then no more puff puff.

For the same reasons do not mix Lionfish with puffers either. Porky puff's are so wide and fat with soft skin I think it makes them extra vulnerable to getting poked.

Wow that's sad news, thanks for the story jeni.I will not try another puffer unless i am willing to build my tank around it.

My favorite fish of all time was "Puff-Daddy". Not only was he the only fish I ever named but also the only one that had everyone in the house crying when he died. Such a great species of fish.

I agree these fish are far different from any other fish I've ever had well put with the dog reference
