Modifying canopy

So i need to raise my canopy. The inside of the canopy has 2 blocks of wood that sit on the top of the tank's sides. I plan to raise the canopy by adding a piece of wood with the same length and width right under each block of wood that is already there. These might be really silly questions but i have no DIY skills so i wanna make sure im doing it right before I mess with my canopy.

1.) Do i need to use a specific type of lumbar for this? Or will pretty much any type of wood be okay for this?

2.) Would it be safe if i just gorrila glue/clamp each piece to the underside of the canopy supports?

I am also planning to hang my powermodule fixture inside my canopy. My canopy is semi open top and for now i just want to place a piece of wood across the length of the canopy and use this piece to drill the ati hanging kit into.

What is the minimum thickness the wood should be for drilling the hanging kit into? Since this will be going on top of my canopy and will be visible, im trying to find the smallest piece that will adequately serve thia purpose.

Thanks!

I'm not a diy guy either but I wouldn't trust them to be glued. I would drill a skinny hole up from the bottom and then take a long wood screw that is slightly bigger then the hole you drilled and do at least 1 screw on each side. If you did 2 screws on each side you wouldn't need glue.

A 1x 3 will be plenty strong. As for your initial questions pics would help.
1x3 it is then!

Here's some pics

Here the front of the canopy is open and you can see one of the pieces of wood that the tank rests on

i used 1 by 1 to raise that canopy still covered the tank rim
Cool thanks Dave, its a beautiful canopy the only flaw is that it sits so low

Ok so you're saying put the new pieces of wood in place and then from the bottom of that, drill through it and into the wood pieces that are already there?
