Mounting LED stars

Is thermal paste really needed? I thought I had some around the house and couldn't find any, that plus the radio shack or the best buy by me don't carry it, was hoping to at least start getting everything mounted this week, and it seems either online or a trip to microcenter will be needed if i really need the paste.

I just been using the berquist thermal pads. Double sided adhesive, cut to shape. You definitely need a thermal solution between the stars and heat sink.

Must use something,otherwise leds burn out very quick.

Hmm those pads are kinda pricey, anyone know how they are compared to a thermal paste/epoxy mix?

Thanks Snide and Tbone, but there is a Microcenter about 20 minutes away from me, only problem is unless I want to deal with horrendous traffic I can only go on the weekends.

And you only need to apply a small amount to each star. Do not over apply as you will only be wasting compound with no added benefits. A small dab spread evenly across the back is perfect and will spread out more as you screw down the stars.
