My puffer puffed

No I didn't scare him, nor did anything in the tank.
It's a common thing I see him puff late night. Stress is not even a factor in this case.

it is their defence mechanism regardless of whether there is a stress factor or not .. it puffs up when it feels threatened .. pretty cute though ..

It's about a minute or so, or till he sees me.

It sees you and realizes it's safe, so deflates.

I feel this is definitely accurate. It's like my foxface that always flexes his spines. No sense in having a defense mechanism if they can't use it. I also feel my puffer partially inflates when eating a big meal to help swallow his food.

I will agree on that.

So far my porcupine hasn't touched my two blood shrimp. He actually lets them clean him when he gets pissed off by my cleaner wrasse.

Nope! In a completely different tank. The huge hermit crab picks on the puffers more then they do!
