New Maxspect wavemaker - Pretty Cool

Vortechs make noise in your tank. I discovered this when I put my underwater camera in my tank. You also still have cables on the outside of your tank that take up real estate on the side of your tank because you have to hang the cable above them. And for some odd reason I've had 2 wet side units suddenly grind up the magnet which costs $80+ to replace the whole unit. Plus fish can get caught in the, and killed unless you use the foam guards which get gunked up and reduce your flow unless you clean them daily.

And? There are still no (zero, zip, nada) wires in the tank.

True. But the problems I listed out way having no wires in the tank IMO.

I don't know, I've never had any of those problems. Only sick fish get sucked into powerheads, You are going to have a blocked side view no matter what powerhead you use, mine weren't noisy unless they were at 100%, and the only time I had a warranty issue in 2 years with my MP40s they took care of it a year out of warranty for free.

The bottom line is, they aren't a "Vortech Killer" because EcoTech doesn't care about the people who want to buy other powerheads. They cater to the people who want an absolute top of the line pump with no wires in the tank, period. On the other hand, it may drop the price on used Vortechs significantly like the Jebao's did.

I plan on getting one.

I did talk to Vortech about my pump at SkullV's suggestion. They think that I don't have the spacer set for the right thickness as that causes this type of problem all the time.

My 2cents:

I don't think this is a "vortech killer" as there will always be a market for ultra premium pumps and people willing pay $500 for a simple pump with all the bells and whistles. For me, Ecotech is the Apple Inc. of the saltwater world and I'm more an android guy (though I do own a macbook). lol

With that said, I do think the used market for vortechs is hurting. Anyway, competition is a good thing for us consumers and this product looks promising! excited to try it out.

Happy "almost Friday" :)

Jebao vs vortech vs captain power pants super pump or whatever comes out next is rubbish. All have their place in the home aquarium, all serve a purpose. These effective yet lower cost pumps allow reefers to stay in the game regardless of situation. I have had a jebao pump, a vortech pump and misc others. I like them all for one reason or another, they all pissed me off for one reason or another. I will certainly try this pump when it comes out as I see it as yet another alternative to what's on the current market, and am really excited about the prospect of what it can do.

Am I expecting a vortech? Nope? Am I looking for a vortech, no, if I was I would be buying a vortech. If I get a pump that Is as effective as they say it is and it saves me some money then it's a winner in my book

Neebles - I never saw your Captain Power Pants Super Pump? Is that something you are saving for when you convert your swimming pool to a giant reef tank?

I think I should clarify. I agree it won't take Ecotech's spot nor should it. My point is that the Riptide is as of a radical change to the established circulation pump paradigm as the Vortech was when it came out. Speaking for myself I like the idea of being able to move a significant amount of tank water without blasting anything in the tank the way current power heads do. With the Vortech you can't place them very close to the surface without starting a suction vortex. They also point directly into your tank which can be a good thing and a bad thing. With the Riptide you actually put it at the top of the tank or in the corners. It will shoot water intensely but it will do it along the sides, or top, of the tank which should avoid blasting most of the thing in your tank except for possibly snails/cucumbers. With the Vortech, traditional power heads, the Jebao pump, or the Tunze Wave box you have no choice but to point it into the tank.

I watched few vids of it on actual tanks and gitta say im intrigued haveing a sps tank im always looking for that perfect flow although i think the jebo pumps r great and priced right this looks like its gonna have me interested as long as the price tag is not like vortec im sorry but i spend that much on a power head i better get a bj too not just my corals. Or they should last forever but i know people always fixing em . Every body has there iwn opinion and fav im always just looking for what works best for my set up and doesnt break the bank

I wouldn't want to get a BJ from a Vortech. That would hurt.

From Reef Central:

Just received the single prop Gyre Riptide flow pump from Maxspect. Here some photos of it in action. We will follow up with videos on this prototype later next week.

i wonder how 2 of them would be? think if you had a deep tank you would need to run 2 side by side?

No, with a larger tank you would just run one of the larger 2 sided models. That is just the prototype for the small 1 sided model. Relevant to my interests :)
