Petco Parasites!

Well, my local Kenosha Petco decided to screw me over and I really have nobody to blame but myself. About a month ago I stopped into my Petco and they had a nice pair of Black Snowflake Clowns. The following weekend they were having a 30% off sale so I decided to wait until Friday to buy them. Come Friday my wife was off work so she stopped in to pick them up for me. She called me to let me know that they both looked kind of lethargic and were hanging out in the sand bed. I told her to use her best judgment, as she's been keeping fish with me for the last 20 years. She asked the staff there and he swore they were in perfect health, and that they were eating well. She bought them and they let her stack a 20% off coupon so out the door I paid $126 for the pair.

I got home from work about an hour later, my wife had already started acclimating them. I finished up and let the fish go. Right away, I suspected something was up with these fish. I gave them a couple days and at that point I knew the fish were both sick. They never left the sandbed and refused any kind of food I put in the tank. Later in the evening of the third day one of them died. I immediately called the store and told them the situation and they refused to do anything for me. I asked for a manger and she asked for the associates name that helped me. I told her and she said he's here, let me go talk to him. She came back a few minutes later and told me the kid told her the he told my wife "I warned her they fish looked iffy to me, but she bought them anyway" WTF?!?! I told her he was lying and that was the complete opposite of what he actually told her, and she decided to believe him anyway.

I wrote a letter to corporate and about 4 days later I got a call from a different manager at the store, this time the head manager. I told her the whole story and she said she was so sorry that happened, but there was nothing she would do for me as they don't warranty the fish. I said who cares about the fish, your employee sold me a sick fish and he lied about it! I talked it over with her and she said she'd call her boss and ask if they could replace the fish. I said that would be great and please let me know.

In the mean time I got some good advice and treated the tank with API General Cure and the very next day the remaining clown perked up. Since then he has fully recovered and is eating like a horse and acting like a healthy clownfish.

Several days passed and the store manager never called me back so I called yesterday and asked for her. I was told she was not in but they'd have her call me back today. I got a voicemail from her a few hours ago and she very curtly told me they would not be replacing the fish, and the best they could do was give me $20 worth of coupons.

I understand the nature of our hobby, and that there is risk when buying fish but it was pretty clear to me that this kid knew full well the fish were sick and lied just to get rid of them. I find it horribly ironic that Petco's slogan is "Where the healthy pets go".

Feel free to repost this anywhere you want, nobody should be buying any fish from Petco.

Well, that sucks. Sorry to hear about the clown. I actually have bought alot of fish from Petco. Can find some great deals every now and then. Just gotta be selective, and ALWAYS qt, especially from stores like Petco.

i bought a coupl fish and inverts from that petco.. Never had a problem but i was always cautious and and made sure all the stuff i got ate.. I mainly got inverts and snails and once in awhile a wrasse or two.. Just be very cautious and qt if u have a spare tank

I have found some hard-to-find butterfly fish by ordering online from them. They have an "alive on arrival" plus 15 day guarantee. I had one die a couple days after arrival and they gave me a full credit, no questions asked. They shipped well, etc. As bad as their store tanks can be, I was really impressed with the online fish orders. That being said, I will always try to buy local first so I can see the fish in motion while eating, etc., even if it costs a bit more.

Petco is a strange place to buy fish. it really depends on location. some are horrible, really bad. But im lucky to live next to one that is not bad at all. have a decent selection of saltwater stock and the guy taking care of them happens to be in the hobby so know a thing or two about what he is doing.

Petco Online comes mostly from Seagrest and QM, so pretty much the same as Live Aquaria (non-DD). Their stores are actually interesting, a lot of clowns from local breeders, frags from hobbyists, they have ORA accounts, etc. The Clyborn store downtown is pretty good. The guy who runs the fish section is clearly a hobbyist, but they still have a lot of issues. They even carry RODI.

The Petco on Rt. 59 in Shorewood is hands down the nicest Petco I have ever been to. Lots of really nice fish that you wouldn't normally see at a Petco, a frag tank full of good looking coral. Has MP10's and AlgaGen Reef Pods on the shelf, which is pretty impressive.

Honestly I have NEVER seen any big box pet store with anything close to resembling a healthy saltwater tank. They all tend to have uniformly awful tanks because they are "cared for" by people who don't seem to know what they are doing. Their prices tend to be jacked up which makes them even less appealing.

well, i have to say, I bought some cheap good stuff from petco before, but I don't like them.
Just take their dollar per gallon sale as an example. They charge full price tax. I bought a 55gal for $55 but end up paying almost $20 just for tax. I think that's illegal. other fish store like pet supply plus will not do that.
Well, they do it sneaky to steal a couple more dollar from custom makes me feel bad.

Not only is it not illegal, it's required in many states. It also depends on the manner in which the item is discounted. In most cases the price that is taxed is the amount that the retailer receives in total. Pet Supplies Plus is probably selling you the tank and eating the difference so they receive nothing from All Glass. Petco on the other hand likely receives the remainder of the tank price in the form of a manufacturer's coupon directly from Tetra. This means that Petco is actually receiving full price on the item so you are paying tax on full price. Same thing with coupons at the grocery store in Illinois.

Not the same in every state.
