A whole house generator would be best but I think this is a good alternative. I got one of these a few years ago and I can run pretty much the whole house with it.

so how does something like this integrate into a homes electrical? Do you just have to plug in extension cords? Or is there a way to work it into home grid?

You can use extension cords; that would be the easiest route. What I did was have an electrician install a power inlet on the side of the house. There's wiring that connects the inlet to my electrical box and a manual lockout installed so I don't backfeed any power.
