Portal Aquarium magnifier?

Hey all,

I suppose it's not "equipment," per se, but I wasn't sure where else to post. Anyone tried out the Portal viewer? I wanted to get it for my bf for Christmas, but it's sort of pricy around $70 and wasn't sure it was worth it.

Thoughts?

I have it! I was thinking it was a gimmick... but I saw them demoing them at MACNA and I had to have one... ended up buying the last one from their booth, they sold all their stock by Saturday!

You would be amazed at how much detail you can see with it. It is also an algae scrubber (does a good job) so I just always leave it on the tank. It is made with an optical lens so you don't get any distortion like you would with a low quality plastic lens.

You can always come over and try it out on my tank if you want.

haha, but you can see the sexys up close with the portal!!! it is really cool on how much detail you can't see.

Like, on my shrimp you can see all their little hairs, and the SPS coral is amazing through it.

I have a macro 100 mm camera lens. Would that work just the same? Or do you think t would make the photography better? My little tank's only 5 gallons. I'd probably break it trying to get this thing on there. I was looking at this for the 29 gal biocube.

I imagine you sitting there just staring into your tank for long, long periods of time...

It does no impact with photography. I have a 60mm macro and and think the two lenses couter act each other.

With this you can causually look at your tank up close and not through a camer or focusing a lens.

Get the nano sized one then. The regular portal will be too big for a tank under 55g IMO.

i tried. the website says "coming soon" for the 2.5 inch and i don't know where to get it from. Do you know where they're selling it?

I picked up one at MACNA as well from Dirk. These things are awesome. They are a great way to view your corals from a fish eye view. Also great for looking for pests. There is an adapter available for looking in to deeper tanks. They are supossedly coming out with and even larger version. I'll buy it!

I bought one straight from the source over the internet. I bought both the regular and telescopic lenses and I love it for all the reasons stated above. I can't wait for them to come out with one with a larger diameter.

How is the telescopic lens? Does it give you a greater magnification than the regular?
