Powerheads Question

So, I am about to get into my first real upgrade for the used tank that I have adopted. I need real powerheads. Being a novice and unaware, the tank I bought came with some seriously sub-par powerheads.

I am looking at either going cheap and getting 2 Koralias or Tunzes or getting an Ecotech MP40. The real question I have is: How many Ecotechs do I need for a 90g tank?

2 MP40s would work GREAT!!!

Or if you want you could go with a Tunze Wavebox and a couple Tunze Controllable Powerheads Ive had success with both

Go to the Ecotech website..under products they have a flow calculator there..easy to use..it'll tell you what you should get. I just picked up the MP60 (man card win!!!) and it's going awesome and really quiet. I'm tempted to put my MP40 on back long side to just crate water flow havoc in my tank.

Yup 1 or 2 mp40 in a 90. Just place your lower flow corals at the far end. I'm only running 2 mp40's on a 6' long 180g tank and my small collection of sps are doing just fine. Everything else loves the amount of flow just fine.

tunzes are much better and cheper then those pice of sh...t vortechs i know like 5-6 people that switched to vortechs and then back again to tunzes

Thanks for the advice guys! Seems MPs are popular options - although my budget would allow for one only. The Tunze is definitely in the minority, but also apparently more than enough.

Basically... I'm still confused, lol. With the Tunze, would I need any other powerheads, or would that basically do the trick?

The biggest plus I see with the MP40 is its small in-tank foot print, so that's fairly compelling. Not sure if its $120 worth of a bonus, but something to try and figure out I suppose. If anyone else would like to offer their experiences with either unit, it would definitely come in handy for me!

Also, thanks for the link - that's a cool calculator they have setup.

With the wave box, not sure if you will need any other powerheads.. I seen one in action and its does the same as the MP's.

But give it a try with it or go with one MP40..

You can always buy one down the road if u need the extra MP40 or MP10

Heh - I'm trying to avoid having to upgrade / supplement again for some time! I have other upgrades that have to come first before re-upgrading the powerheads! Still torn... but the Tunze wavemaker is sounding better and better - it'd be $130 I can spend on the next upgrade (rocks and sand)!

I think the biggest thing that's still making me wonder is just the large footprint on the wave-maker.. I like to keep as much gear out of the tank as possible!

I agree on space!! Thats the only downside about the wave maker.. But Im use to an overflow box and this won't bother me at all going wave maker

If u have the cash and want the small foot print go MP... No more thinking ;)

I think that's why I'm more conscious of the space - I do have an overflow box / column thing! And being a total noob, I was not expecting that / nor did I realize how much space it took up until I brought my newly adopted tank home. Lol... oh well, live and learn! So now I definitely appreciate things with a small footprint....

True though, no more thinking! Thank you for all of the help!!

Will do, thanks again! Still a debate for me - but much closer to just caving to the expensive MP... The $130 difference is hard to swallow! Especially when my tank needs more boosts, lol!

Thanks for the vids! I've definitely looked them up, and was drawn to their sleek (and small) look coupled with the good results. I'm about 90% sure I'll go that direction now....

The videos did cause me to wonder though - how do you test for dead spots even?
