I have to agree with the OP. Her first two sentences were doubting having a reef and her direction/goals with her tank. She never asked if the puffer was reef safe. Just the value of it. Blue Zoo puts their 10 inch specimens at $150.
While I believe people were well intentioned in their advice it wasn't what the OP was asking for.
This thread had nothing to do with op original question.
anicemess said:All I was asking is the value of a 12" puffer. As you can see, nobody answered. I don't consider "give me all your stuff and let's say he ate it because that's what will happen anyway" any kind of a useful answer. It was very rude.
I'll send you a picture of him. He is very gorgeous. I had to rescue him. No one else around here I'm sure had a tank big enough and the LFS only had a 75 gal for him. This is more of a rescue than a purchase. MY bf thinks it was a bad idea since young fish are the same price, but nobody realizes it's rescue and not a purchase. I gave the LFS $50 and got a discount on a beautiful panther grouper at the same time.
That's true. However, if you posted that you were going to buy a fish that could possibly eat many other fish that you buy as well as your coral, wouldn't you want someone to speak up and tell you? I could be totally wrong, maybe the Op built this huge tank and doesn't want coral or a cuc? Maybe her new direction is to only keep one large pufer and other bigger fish that it won't eat? Sure, some of the joking probably wasn't necessary, but aside from that, it is every responsible aquarists duty to inform someone if they think someone might be doing something that could end up killing something else.
What do you suppose would have happened if someone simply said, "The fish is worth $100 bucks.", and the OP went out and bought it. How angry would the OP have been if the very next fish added to the tank became lunch? Or if her cuc was wiped out in a day or two. Would the OP have then become angry that nobody warned her? Did the OP already research this fish and was already fully aware of its nature? Maybe...who knows... As of a couple weeks ago, the OP still had a Domino Clown in this tank. If it's still there then maybe the OP plans to remove it before buying the puffer so it won't get eaten or maybe the OP would have lost a fish if nobody spoke up...
In any event, as a responsible reefer (and not a mod), I think it is our duty to inform our fellow reefers if they may be doing something that could have serious implications. If the OP already knows what to expect and has a plan, then great...no harm - no foul![]()
