Questions regarding GFO and carbon reactors

I got one of these from a friend and was wondering if I want to keep a extremely pristine tank should I run GFO and carbon.. And if I'm running this can I not keep a clam or other inverts? Also any tips on setting this up.. I'm pretty sure it's this one

U can keep a clam and inverts no problem. Just b careful with the Gfo and start off a little slow. That way u don't do a drastic change. Just put half the amout that's recommended. Atleast that's how I did it.
 
I do know clams and gfo don't mix. Gfo should also be gradually acclimated to a tank. Reducing phosphates too fast can cause big problems. I personally loved my Brs reactor except for the maxijet pump. It's noisy and overkill. Depending on tank size you may only need a single reactor with both running. The dual is convenient for larger tanks. Buy equipment once is something I wish I learned early on.

Will do.. Do u tank GFO and carbon are a must to keep a pristine tank.. For some sps

I only got the dual unfortunately.. Do u thnk I need to change to a smaller pump like 900 or stick with the 1200.. I should just probably use less GFO and carbon then huh
 
See I was warned by many to cut out gfo if I had clams. I miss gfo and gave it all away to a buddy who bought frags with algae outbreaks. If you want awesome sps color then pristine water is way to go. If you plan on mixed reef then carbon will help with warfare. You can also keep tank too clean. Been there with zoas; I watched a decline in growth.

I do want my parameters to be pristine but only because I want to prevent an algae break out.. But not really gonna be heavy on sps.. Just some here and there like monti's and maybe an acro or two and some birdsnest..... But besides GFO and carbon is there anything else I can run in the reactor to keep my water pristine
 
Idk about dosing cal. If you over do it you could have issues. Cal and alk should be dosed equally. Kalk in ur ato with a ph monitor will help allot. If you have a heavy sps load then dosers. I would start out like me with just kalk in ato. Worry about adding cal with waterchanges.
 
High jacking your thread because I'm wondering about carbon. What is the main purpose of carbon? From what I've know it's main purpose it to make the water clearer and cleaner looking. Does it also help with any of the perams?
