raccoon faced butterfly???

I went to a local well respected saltwater fish store today looking for a copperband butterfly fish. Knowing the fish's picky-ness I asked the guy to feed it. The one they had there wouldn't eat brine shrimp so I asked the guy if there were any other fish that may nibble on aptaisia. He suggested the raccoon faced butterfly fish. I had just told him that my blue hippo had to be removed for picking on my corals - and I bought a coral frag?!?

I bought the fish home and its doing fine in the tank and we watched it bite right into a mushroom. My wife googled it and several websites came up saying this fish is not reef safe. Any experiences with this fish??? Hopefully the guy is cool tomorrow when I want to return the fish!!!

They are most definitely not reef safe and it is because they will pick at all of your corals. At least you're getting a finicky fish to eat on the bright side. I've never tried returning a fish but I dot imagine you can. All of the transition from tank to tank is a lot of stress on fish. I would guess all sales are final but best of luck to you. And keep eye on those corals for bite marks and missing polyps

There's only a select few that people classify as "reef-safe", and even then people still preface with "it's still a butterfly". Whether or not a fish picks really depends on the fish and how you run your tank.

As a general rule, butterflies in general are not reef safe. Some are "better" than others, but as was said earlier, ALL butterflies are natural coral eaters. It's hard to break instinct.

Can't believed they would tell u they are never never buy a fish without doing research h on them lesson learned
