Rare Hawaiian Flame Angelfish

Was at Reefwise yesterday and decided to buy a Flame Angel. Well a particular one caught my eye and I told them I wanted it. Turns out this particular Flame is not a normally caught flame angel. This one is a rarer morph of Flame from Hawaii. It commanded a higher price, but the beauty of this particular angel was amazing. So I went for it over the normal angel. And I have to say, it definitely looks awesome in my tank.

Here's a few shots, I'll try and get some nicer ones.

Thanks to Brian at Reefwise for the awesome fish.

Congrats on the great pickup. I was in there a few weeks ago specifically asking about getting a Hawaiin for my tank and he was supposed to PM me when he was able to finally get one in. Glad to see he was able to. :ranger:

Nice addition Karl!

Are these guys reefsafe? I always thought they weren't but I swear everyone I have seen in a reefer's tank has been with coral.

Nice fish! So the Hawaiians have less black detail and more red then?

Hawaiian flames are more of reddish color than the general orangish hue on the flame angels we regularly see.. which makes the red color more vibrant. also the black bars are much thinner and the blue on tails is also much thinner.... all around making it a almost red ( true flame color;) )

i have seen one side by side with regular ones at old town sometime back .. they are beautiful but ridiculously high priced (well, being at old town aquarium )

nice grab :)

True Hawaiins have almost no orange coloration with super deep red colors. They literally glow red. The best I have ever seen were at ShoTanks. They are usually priced around $80+ and you'll know one when you see one.

Walt, this is the same Hawiian one that was in stock when you were at the shop last. We have not received anymore since.

We only get one in every month or two....sometimes our suppliers goes months without even getting one. All the other flames at the shop are from Christmas/Marshal Isands.

Sweet pickup . What makes this little guy rare? Coloration, where he comes from , or what else?

True Hawaiian Flame is fire red without any orange and very little black. Besides the extra red (and less orange), the other differences are the bars are thinner and have a slightly different pattern. Also the tips of the dorsal and anal fin have less of the blue as the red goes farther back.
They are more rare , because of strict law in Hawaii concerning fish export.
Very nice pick up Karl !!

From my understanding true Hawaiian fish are becoming increasingly difficult to acquire. I could have sworn I heard that true Hawaiian flames can't be collected anymore (relatively recent development?) I'll have to find something to support this, but that is my understanding.

They are generally considered a "with caution" reef-safe fish. Some can be perfectly fine in reefs, while some will destroy everything, while others may occasionally nip at corals if they are hungry or curious. It really depends on the fish. I intend on feeding him quite well.
