As Summer rolls to a quick end and some of us are getting back to work I thought that it would be nice to have something to comfort me on those late nights while I am at the office.
This is my new Nano build thread. I was inspired to put this together after reading this story on Reef Builders. This is a simple build since most of the items I already have laying around in my extra stuff box! The only real items I have to buy are
-EMT 1/2" conduit
-Additional hardware for EMT
-Base or pedestal
-Paint
Planning to use a Maxi-Jet 606 as a return and Tetra Submersible Aquarium Heater preset @ 78 degrees. I have a rapidLED Par38 bulb just collecting dust, so I will be using this as the main source of lighting. The tank was a Fuval Zen 8G.....which by the way is complete garbage. I tossed the old LED/filter box scraped the hardware off and painted the back black.
Live stock will be simple as well maybe a Coral banded shrimp or sexy shrimp. Live rock from my DT and a couple of Acans. Nothing to heavy. So here we go!
So here we have the raw materials. At first I thought that it would look sharp if I bent the conduit to hang the light. I soon realized that I could not make such a sharp 90 degree bend without kinking the metal. So that's why you see Nate's bender in the picture.

So I had to make a 1/2 hole for the conduit and the collar so that I could lock it into place from the bottom. Messed up the first hole, no worries I'll just make another one! LOL
You can cut the EMT with a regular hack saw real simple like. Everything is in the electrical isle at your local hardware store. I used (2) 90 degree elbows and (1) collar that's it. Made real good progress in one night.
Wiring is simple too, I had most of these items here at the house. Used the old fug light socket and cord and presto we have light. Now I couldn't find a simple way to attach the light socket to the EMT so I just ended up using my coral 2 part epoxy.
Some close ups
HAHAH that's me in the reflection!
Everything fit nice and tight and powered up smoothly. Now I had a decorative lamp shade for the PAR38 bulb but I was concerned about it getting to warm since it was a tight fitting shade. I think I will run it with out it. I get very little spillage and am happy with the intensity of the light in the tank. Time for some paint.
That's it for now will have more pic this afternoon or tonight! have to think of a way to make a filter housing.
