Reef in a jar challenge

My buddy has something to this effect his wife ordered online. Its tiny completly sealed shrimp eco sysytem when i saw it i wasnt sure about it its shaped like a egg with flat bottom came with 4 shrimp . Might of had algae in it but cant remember . Sun light deeds the algae that feeds the shrimp and the shrimp reproduce and the circle of life continues . Hes had it few yrs now. Now that this been brought up next time i go to his house i gotta c if theres still shrimp in there or not .hmm .

There is a DIY ecoshpere, called Evivo Desk Biosphere. It's got some pretty crap reviews. If you watch their youtube vid on how to set it up, them mix the saltwater and dump the live shrimp into it without even waiting 5 minutes!

I'm guessing your buddies is an ecosphere if it's egg shapped.

I swear, but I'm not sure what forum I read it on, someone was talking about their jarquarium that had been sealed for years. I think if you can get it just right when building it, once equilibrium hits, it's reasonably self sustaining. I'd like to find it to see what all he had in it. I just remember it looked like a big jar of algae.

GROUPON ALERT!!!

The original ecosphere tear drop is $50 shipped, a $30 savings. Only 9 hours remain

yep, I'm tempted myself. Anyone game to buy one and open it up to measure salinity?

While I'm here, no real update on my DIY jarquarium. Copepods are swimming around, a little detritus on the bottom, but otherwise looks exactly as I made it.

Any update Herbie?

The copepods look like they have all died in mine. The Dragon's breath is fading in color and the cheato is translucent in spots. Water is clear except for the small amount of detritus.

Mine really looks about the same but with a lot of detritus building up. Several live snails but they hang out mostly in the bubble. At least one amphipod creeping around. No visual on the brittles. Chaeto is pretty green but the det must be it breaking down. I'll cap a vid on it tomorrow. I really think the bubble is extremely important. Unfortunately it's not aesthetically pleasing. I'm trying to come up with an inverted vessel inside the larger so the bubble can be inside the water. Like a diving bell.

Pretty cool. Looks like your having better success than I am. I'll wait to see if the cheato comes back or dies out. Then I'll probably test the water to see how toxic it is.

So after i saw this when i came over nates house it got me all curious on how the heck heck he is keeping his macro algae and hitchhiker inverts alive in there so i made my own.. Hoping to get the same results.. So far so good.. We'll see lol

Have live rock rubble, cheatomorpha algae, and Red Gracilaria..

Hopefully this becomes successful :)

Any update on this Jeff?
