Refugiums?

I'm will be using a 7'x2'x2' sump for a 450 DT. Granted that the sump will only be filled approximately 70% that is 145 gallons, and the refugium section will be about 46 gallons of that sump volume. From all the reach that I have done this seems to be a good ratio.

You still have approximately 1/3 of your DT volume in sump, and out of that volume 1/3 is dedicated to a refugium.

I hope that this makes sense.

Wouldn't you need to vacuum the sand bed to?

In a bare bottom it's a lot easier to see and looks dirtier quicker. A sand bed helps disguise it a little bit better and also your clean up crew does most of the clean up with a sand bed. I usually do a light sand bed vacuum maybe once every 3-4 months. Where as the bare bottom you need to do about every 2 weeks so it looks decent.

Live sand beds have thousands of critters that keep it clean. I keep a cucumber in all my tanks, to keep the surface vacuumed.
