RO Water from LFS.....Green Bloom in tank

So Tuesday night I went and got some RO water from my LFS Ocean Design Aquarium. I didn't test with my TDS meter because I thought oh what the heck it will be fine. AAARRRCCCKKK wrong......Ever since then I've had a huge Greem Algae bloom with some brown algae also. for the past 3 days the water has looked gloomy kind of like a Light Green look to is. There are tons of what looks like Micro Bubbles.

So I had another 5gallon bucket with their RO water and I tested it right now came up at 70.

Do you think that's what cause my tank to go all crazy like it has, parameters are all good though as far as Salinity, Cal, Nit, Nat, etc.

Also what do you think I should do to fix this situation?

Thanks in adcance!!!

Sounds like the same battle that I had to go through and it was terrible. Not sure if you got the same thing going on but I had a bad plankton problem that just made my water hulk out green style FOREVER. Happened some time after i just set the tank up and started out with bad problem of green algae and turned to nasty brown algae which concerned me but i assumed it was possibly just cycling really gross untill my water began turning green. So after some time I couldn't stand it so destroyed it all by shutting the lights off for a few days. Everything was good and out of no were the green water just took over. Tried many things for awhile and honestly couldn't tell ya what did it but these were the things I did.

Lights out for a few days to kill it off
Rotifers to eat the plankton
Like Tethered said tho last thing I did was use the algae fix with lights out. Make sure you do major w/c sucking the death out.
SCREW PLANKTON!

How long has your tank been running?

I had the same issue when i started my frag tank. I had pretty good luck with the polishing filter in a marineland canister. Thats total bunk if you h2o is 70ppm from a fish store. I think I'd freeze the bucket and return the ice vigorously.

Many water changes and stop adding nutrients to the water column. Also drastically shorten you light cycle. This with a proper maintenance schedule and some patience should fix your problem!

First you need to tell the LFS they need new membrane and prefilters. Tell them what happened and how their water tested. Heck take it back and make them test it. I had same issue from one store, and it tested positive for PO4, I let them know but do not buy from them anymore. Switched to different store and no more issue. I did finally buy my own RO unit.

Side bar, UV will clear the water in few days, make sure your skimmer is in good order. I got a cheap 15W ebay skimmer and run it with MJ400 when I see any blooms starting. works wonders

Yes there was another member that had same problem at that same LFS, I'm pretty sure he brought it to his attention but obviously no change. Coral Reef on Lawrence is close to ocean design, they are a CR sponsor and you would not have that problem there.

ok I had the same thing ... major brown green encrusting alge everyplace basically said remove everything boil everything and start over ... then I seen an article about 3 day black out ...I did it

1) tell your corals and fish they are on time out but your not mad at them...:)
2) cover the whole tank with the thickest towles you can find ( peek inside to see its all dark..) I had to use 2 beach towels (make sure you don't have it touchng the water or you get a siphon effect and you will basically drain your tank
3) leave coverd and only open for 5 min to feed fish

MOST IMPORTANT be sure your pumps are on (I accidentally unplugged my pump to make a mixed drink )and cuz the tank was coverd and a few drinks I didn't notice the pump was off and lost a few nice fish (alcohol kills )
anyway on the 3rd day your tank will be 100% alge clean

this will not harm fish(when pump is running) corals or clams (I have a maxima) and 3 days was nothing harmfull in fact the coral and clam came right out
