Rusting stainless and skimmers

I had a piece of stainless that was part of a Sicce pump I picked up that was starting to show some rust. For about a week my skimmer was going nuts and I could not figure it out I did 3 big water changes and it didn't help. I finally noticed the piece of metal and removed it. 3-4 days later the skimmer went back to normal. Not sure what it was. Could it have been the rust?

It may have been a low grade or coating but it was stainless. It was fine for about 5 months. It wrapped the pump. It is an older Sicce and maybe meant for ponds.

It could have been rust. Stainless does rust and corrode, atleast on the surface. It is resisant, but lower grades especially can show rust.

There are about a dozen grades of stainless, and even medical grade will rust if exposed for too long without cleaning.

Check with the manufacturer. It could be rust but on my old Bubble Baster pump from reef octopus it turned out to be surface oxidation. That's what they tested when I shipped them the pump. Wiz.

I know this is a month old, but stainless will rust. It just wont stain. Its not called rustless. The rust wont stain anything.
