Looking for suggestions on a new skimmer for my 180 mixed reef. There are so many out there to choose from. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.THANKS!!
Warner Marine MF201. I have it on my 180 and LOVE it. Once broken in, it has such fine tuning capabilities, and the way it's designed minimizes micro bubbles leaving the contact chamber. I have mine sitting in the same compartment as my return pump temporarily and the display is sparkly clear. It uses an Eden 5000 pump and is virtually silent while pulling over 1200lph of air.
Skimz sm201 and Warner mf201 are basically the same. Jon Warner worked with skimz, changed several of the parts visually, improved the bubble plate design and used blue instead of white plastics. They are also the same retail price as well. Heck I got a skimz user guide in the box, lol!
I would look at the Reef Octopus skimmers. I had the Extreme 160 on a 70 gallon tank and I thought it performed very well. For a 180 you would want a larger model. I think they are reasonably priced as well.
I am currently running a WM skimmer also. So far its definitely my favorite between SRO SWC and WM that ive had.
I also run it in same compartment as return, no microbubbles at all! Just incase, i do have the output under a ledge with foam on it. Has a slight hum to it but its bearable. Great design, and is the same price as the comprable skimz so id def get the WM. He's based out of Cali instead of Singapore.
Easiest skimmer to dial in for sure, very precise. Plus you can put it in 9" and it works great!
I also liked the swc skimmers. It was dead silent (could not believe how silent it was i would plug it in and unplug it and could never tell when its on even with must pumps off) and performed quite well until the pump died after only 5 weeks of use! Got a WM because i needed a skimmer asap and it isnt as easy as email and replace to get a replacement pump from swc.
Sro skimmers are top of the line but require 5.75 water height and are loud! Great warranty and great customer service.
Should mention my WM is the mf181. Running on 130 total gallon system. I hear the 201 with 5000 pump is quieter, but that skimmer would be way too big for my tank (small bioload, 2 small tangs and sps).
SRO3000 on my tank. Bubble Blaster pump is above the competition and has 3yr warranty. Insane skimming and about 1/4 as loud as a vortech mp40. Can't hear it with cabinet doors closed, non-issue. Let me add they have incredible customer service. They redesigned the pump volute and sent me the new design for free, along with a set of new titanium screws. Best $400 I ever spent on my tank.
