Smelly sticky sand?

Well I was doing a water change and was trying to pick off cyano from my sand bed and it seemed sticky. When I took a pinch out it was kinda smelly to but the water doesn't smell nor is there any foul stench coming from the tank. Any idea why it could be like this? Thanks in advance

I believe cyno is a combination of high phosphates and areas without sufficient current.

Best bet is to use a phosphate reducer, siphon out as much as you can, and increase flow.

i have cyano right on my powerhead, the stuff can live wherever. phosphates and photoperiod. nutrient export is the best reducer, at least what i see when i do a water change.
