Splash, splash, gurgle, gurgle, glug, glug!

The problem I had last night:

My reef tank is making all sorts of splashing noises into the overflow & gurgling noises from the return into the sump. It's like a toilet flushing. Pulled out the overflow pipe & cleaned out all the holes but it's still doing it. Hubby the pipefitter says it's fine. I know what my tank's supposed to sound like & IT'S NOT FINE! No sleep for me tonight.
Can you figure out what solved it???

The return pipe was below the water level in the sump. In other words the water level in the sump was too high.

Mine's a good 6-8" below the sump's water level right now.

Answer: I'm not sure how the overflow intake pipe got shortened but that's where the problem was. I made it taller & the splashing in the overflow stopped, so the air that was getting sucked in & down to the return is totally normal now. Not sure why the pipefitter couldn't have figured out that simple solution!
