Sps's out of water...

I have a question...when I do my water changes, my sps corals are out of the water during that 5-7 min time frame because they're all the way at the top...my question is, Is that safe to do so, especially on a weekly basis? I'm not concerned with lps's or softies being out of the water, but I've always wondered if that could have been the reason why my previous corals didn't make it.

Well, I guess my problem was placing the sps's too close to the light. They seemed to all bleach and die quickly.

They can be out of the water alot longer than that. When I was diving in fiji you would see an entire sps reef out of the water baking in the sun for a hour plus. They slime to protect themselves.

Just remember all SPS are not all the same. Some take stress better than others. The hard to keep ones tend to have more color and cost more.Out of all mine the one that dies is the Stawberry Shortcake. Go figure.

I didn't have much luck with sps besides Monti's. I finally found out most of my sps that didn't die completely came back alive towards the bottom of my tank or in partial shaded areas. My Monti's like it when there almost sticking out of water and they grow like wild fire there. I'm a softies and anemone person i figured out on my display. I think im going to start a few large tanks with sps @ a large warehouse i think i am going to help with. The guy that owns it raises fresh water now and wants to get into saltwater, Will know more after weekend about all of it.

My Strawberry shortcake is high on my reef and out of the water all the time for water changes... no ill effects.

sps can stay out longer then any corals, because in the wild when the tides go down the are exposed for days..so i agree with imbuggin

I would think that's true for the high light SPS, but the deepwater likely can't cope, but then again, if you have any lower light SPS, they are likely too far down to be exposed :)
