starting out strong

ok i just got a 40 breeder and im gonna make the jump into saltwater and growing coral and what not lighting wise what exactly should i know? i dont know what kinds of coral i will have yet so suggestions are appreciated.

I would go with LED's for sure. It gives you the option to grow what ever you decide to put in the tank. What other components are you going to use? Like skimmer, sump, rock, flow, power heads? Give us a little more info

It all starts with what you plan to keep. The 40b is a great platform. If you want to do a mixed reef, make sure your lighting
Can handle SPS. Before you set up the tank, browse around the forum. I as well as many others have 40b build threads that you can look in to. There are some really great guys on here and we are always willing to help.

What ever u do dont listen to any advise from a lfs or someone trying to sell u stuff . For the obvious reason . And dont listen to frosty jay hes crazy just kidding. Best tging do do is look at setups c what corals u like and want to focus on research and talk to other reefers and get good info. Take u time it gets confusing everyone has there own way of doing things at time u be like whats right whats wrong . Good luck lots of good guys on here that will help u out .

Welcome to CR and the wonderful world of SW! Knowing fresh water means you understand the nitrogen cycle, now throw the rest out the window lol. No seriously, and this is just my 2 cents... But maybe start out very slow, grab some "clean" live rock and do a FOWLR or fish only with live rock. Get your feet wet and absorb as much knowledge as you can and then slowly get into corals, or just dive right in and hope for the best. Salt water can get very expensive, very quickly and tough lessons become costly.

You could spend hours, if not days researching one topic, such as lighting, or filtration, or additives, etc., etc. Best to take it slow and ask lots of questions! Use these forums during your build and ask opinions prior to any purchase you make and you will get some solid advice. These forums are some of the best pages of information found on the internet and the folks here are very helpful.

Best of luck, looking forward to seeing your tank come to life.
