so ive been thinkin bout what fish i want in my 37gal and i was wondering what u guys think the max number of fish i could keep in this tank? now most of the fish im lookin at r around 2-3in the biggest being 4. my number of what i want is 8 but that seams a lil high to me just lookin for some input

I say 8 is waaaaay to many fish. You say you're looking at 2-3" fish, but are you paying attention to how big they will eventually grow to make sure they don't outgrow your tank in 6 months? I would not do more than 3-4 fish, possibly only 3 if you're looking at 4" ones. If your tank can handle the bioload and you go with smaller fish then you shouldn't have an issue with 4. 5 would be pusing it unless they were small.

Ok. I'll be the one to go against what everyone else is sayin. 7-8 fish could work depending on what kind of fish. As long as they get along, and are not very territorial, they should be fine. Also, no open swimmers. Might just mean more maintenance. I always push the envelope. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Don't know till you give it a shot.

my plan would be 2 clowns 2 zebra firefish pygmy hawk tail spot blenny mandarin and a flasher wrasse mabe only have 1 clown thats why i said 7 or 8 and only 1 clown to not have to worry bout them spawning and turning into azzholes

i gave the adult full grown size of the fish not how big they would be when i got them

2 Occe/Percula clowns
1 Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus Species, ie: Yellowfin, Linespot, McCosker, Carpender)
1 Pygmy Hawk
1 Tailspot Blenny

OR

2 Occe/Percula clowns
3 Flasher Wrasses, 1 Male & 2 Female (Paracheilinus Species)

I would go with the first lineup but the second can work if you have a bonded harem of 3 Flashers. They are pelagic and are known for jumping. I know from experience.

I would not recommend a Mandarin for a 37 gallon tank unless you have prior experience with them, your tank is heavily stocked with copepods, and you are persistent with your copepod replenishment. A single Mandarin will devour an entire self sustaining population in a 37 gallon in a month or less so they will need to be re-stocked.

I would not recommend Firefish with the Flashers or larger Fairy wrasses (Cirrhilabrus), because they frequently bully Dartfishes is small tanks. Firefish color and dorsal fin gestures look too similar to a Flasher wrasses competitor. Either the firefish or the wrasse and firefish will jump out of the tank from this behavior. Sometimes these two fish families (Dartfish and Reef Labrids) can get along but a 37 gallon stacks the odds against you.

well im going to have a hob fuge for the mandarin and i do not have a problem restocking pods for it. it would be nice if eventually i could get it to eat other things but ive done the research to keep them and am confident i can do it. now my only question with the wrasse would be if i buy a male and only have him in the tank he would stay male right?

Yes. If you had a subadult it would eventually grow into a terminal male. Once it's terminal - has full grown male plumage - then it will stay that way for the rest of it's life.

The only way it would remain female is if it was a subadult with an omnipresent terminal male.
