Switching Evergrow LEDS Out

With our group buy on the evergrows last spring, I got a bunch of extra LEDS. I'd like to take out a few of my whites and put some blues in. Before I take apart my fixture, I thought I'd ask if anyone here has done this and how difficult it is? I assume it requires soldering (which I've never done before)? How are the optics attached?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I might also be interested in buying some blues if someone has some extras.

The hardest part is taking it apart and putting it back together yes they are soldered in I have changed them and its really not that hard but make sure that you get solder wick from radio shack (3.00 bucks) to remover the solder so you don't burn the board they are mounted on The good part about using the solder wick is that the wire are still the same length and you don't have to cut new ones and the ends are still tinned for your new bulbs

Thanks guys. I think I'll give it a shot in a week or two. I'd like to be able to ramp my second channel up a little more without washing out my tank. Currently, even at 95% blue / 25% white, it still looks washed out. I'd like to remove a few whites and all of the reds.

Rich, I appreciate the offer and I'll take you up on it. I'll pm you my address. Thank you.

It is easy. I have swapped almost half of mine on the 2080. Make sure you get the positives and neg lined up the right direction. Pm me if you need help, I am not far from you!

Just food for thought.

Their older generation (Bridgelux Type) of three watt LEDs produces a lot of heat.

Use a thermal compound for good transfer and when you solder the ends pre tin both ends as too much heat can damage an LED.

Siebo, what did you change on yours? I'm thinking I want to change a few on mine. I have 2 2080s, Kratos layout, over my 125g 6 footer and at 85 blue 40 whites 16" above tank I'm bleaching corals. I have the 120 optics in. I tried removing them, but it washes the whole room in light since I have no canopy and prefer no canopy. I've since turned them down to 75b/25w for the last week to see if it helps.

I posted this last night, but it disappeared, so I'll post again......

If I buy diodes from ReefBreeders, will they work in my Evergrow Lights? I assume they are the same?

I'm looking replace half of my whites on my white channel with royal blues. I'll probably also get rid of some of the UV's and purples too. Some of the current leds appear to produce almost no light. This idea is that I'll be able to turn up the juice on my second channel without washing out the blues.

Project complete. Today I replaced two greens and nine whites with royal blues (450) in both of my fixtures. It was my first time soldering, but it was easy. I did miss the nearly invisible negative signs on the diodes, so I had to redo about half of them on the first fixture.

Here is a comparison. The fixture on the left is not changed. The fixture on the right has been swapped out. Both fixtures are set to 100% on the blue channel, and 65% on the white channel. As you can see, it's much more blue. This is going to allow me to turn up the second channel quite a bit without washing out the blues.

I've been reading that blue light encourages upward growth ranter than horizontal. All of my montis grow horizontal and even down. I'm oping this change in color will help everything grow vertically.

so did you use the leds from reefbreaders I want to do the same thing, get rid of the green and reds and put more blues and royal blues in

On two fixtures, I switched out about 12 on each. I mostly got rid of white and also a few green. I replaced everything with royal blue. Now I can turn up channel two without washing out the blue. I can get it up to about 70% and it still has a nice blue color. I only have about six whites left per fixture.

If you are technically skilled at all, you should be able to handle it. Let me know if you need help.

cool ! Thanks , i will .... How long did it take you about per fixture ?

The first one took about an hour and a half because I soldered half of the diodes in with the polarity wrong. I had to take it apart, do some soldering, and put it together twice. There is a tiny "-" sign on each diode. It is almost invisible. Make sure you get that on the negative side.

The second one took about 30 min.

On most of the diodes, I didn't even use new solder. I just used what was there from when it was built.

Gunner,
I am going to replace my 150w Intel-Led Fixture soon. What do I need? I have RY-led chips, thermo glue and paste ..solder...what else I need?

how did you get the ones off that you replaced ? Dremmel ? Or did you heat the solder up and pull them off ?
