tank cycle

can i get a quick rundown of how my tank should cycle. i already tried searching and cant find somthing clear.
 
You need ammonia (pure; from the hardware store) or a source to generate ammonia (I use a raw shrimp.) After the ammonia spikes it should drop; your nitrites should go up then drop and then your nitrates will go up. Do a water change (I like 50%) and then you're ready to add livestock.
 
Ok thanks. I didn't do it like that the first time I forgot what I did actually but I will probably try the shrimp method. What about to start it should I ise live sand or rock? What about using a cup of sand from an established tank?
