Can you skim to much, I was alway told you can never have a big enough protein skimmer. I am having a hard time keeping my coaral going, can it be to much skimming and uv? Iam I taking out to much out of the water?

can i ask why you are running a uv what kind of corals are you keeping some would need some "dirty" water so ive heard

1st things first... Post what tank size you have, equiptment as well... How are your water parameters? what coral are you talking about? ETC

Well i run a super skimmer 220 on a 75 plus 36w uv and tank was dosed with copper 2 times and i keep sps no problem any coral no problem. How old is tank and is it done cycling and parameters in check. Think those will be bigger issue that to much skimming . Some lps do do better in dirty water never seen then sie just usually dont grow very much

I the tank was dosed copper before that is why you're having a hard time with corals. The sand and rocks can have copper on them. You pretty much need new everything if u want a to have a reef system

My setup is around 40-45 twv and I skim with a SWC-120. For the first month, maybe two, my sps would either languish or die. I couldn't figure out why. I would broadcast feed and it seemed to not do the trick. One day while feeding, I decided to target feed and my coral went crazy. A few more days of target feeding, all my SPS were MUCH better. It hit me that my skimmer was scrubbing my water of everything.

I now turn off my skimmer for hours and feed heavy and it has made a huge difference in my tank. My SPS are doing exceptionally well. Reefwise turns off their skimmer every night and I do the same since that's when PE is bananas.

Wow I would like to try this a couple of nights. Thanks Walt!

mostly soft corals, everything opens up when I do a water change. I have a 300 gal tank, water is in line.
I run a Hsa 3000 skimmer and 80 watt uv, maybe a little over kill. So thinking of not running the skimmer and uv for 6 hrs at night

have u tryed it before u say it cant be done . im just saying lot of people say u cant do stuff and people always proveing them wrong. i saw a tank on here he said hasnt done water change in 4 years people say impossible well he did it. i ve treated my whole tank with copper twice sand rock all equipment every thing never changed a thing . its been a sucessful sps reef for over two years. just using some carbon to get most cooper out . i stir my sand all the time. still good over here. just saying if u havent tried it hard for u to say it wont work. when i know it can be done first hand.

doubtful. Pics or it didn't happen

And wow walt, interesting tip on the skimmer... i might try that! Even tho i'm spot feeding every other day now, i'm not getting much more PE :( I"m gonna try dosing ammino acids as well as to azox and reef chilli

Doubtful talking bout my tank lol theres already pics up of it plenty of people here seen my tank. Also turning off skimmer and target feeding corals love it but easier with smaller tanks obviously.

hahaha. I wouldn't try dosing my reef tank with copper! are you crazy!!!
Why would I put copper in my reef when hundreds of tanks out there have lost all their corals or unable to grow corals with copper in their system.
