Treating Ich/Crypt with Vitamin C

I recently had an ich outbreak on a new large, FW parrot cichlid. Poor thing was covered in thousands of cysts. In 2 days of ONLY using VC, it's almost gone!

Yep but they effect the fish in the same way & I have been successful at treating both with VC. I was just shocked at how fast it helped my cichlid. Never tried it in FW before. Never had a problem with FW ich before.

So you are saying that you can use vitamin c to cure ich in marine aquarium and never see it again?

I have no idea if the parasite is still present in the tank after it's off the fish. As far as I know, the only way to be 100% sure of that is to leave the tank fallow for 8 weeks. I have added new fish since then & never saw the parasite again.

As far as the fish today--I've never seen such an infestation fall off a fish so fast! Yesterday he was covered in ich. I can barely see any spots now.

And the only thing that could have done it was the vit c? Don't think so its not the miracle thing you claim it to be NOTHING would make it disappear that fast stop making it seem to be the cure all! I'm sure there is something that it helps but come on already its your opinion not a fact!

It is FACT that this fish was covered in thousands of cysts yesterday & the day before. I've done nothing else but add VC for 2 days & now it's barely there at all. Same thing happened on my SW puffer.

I think I want to try this too. What brand do you use and how much? I have been dosing vodka but fish don't seem to like it so I think I will make the switch.

To figure out how much to use, decide if you want to simply improve coral growth, spread, and color. If so, then you should dose around 5 ppm twice daily (down to 2-3 ppm works also). If you are having problems with coral or fish health, dose up to around 30 ppm twice daily.

Calculate the total net number of gallons in your tank (minus rocks, sand, etc). Enter that number here ______.

You will now need to do a little math. The amounts below are for 100 gallons of water so if you have 50 net gallons, cut the amounts shown below in half etc.

Dosing amounts using Iherb product:
1/4 tsp=1112 mg.

For every 100 gallons:

5 ppm ----- 1892 mg VC
10 ppm ---- 3785 mg VC
15 ppm ---- 5677 mg VC
20 ppm ---- 7570 mg VC
25 ppm ---- 9462 mg VC
30 ppm ---- 11355 mg VC

After you have figured out how much you want to dose at each dosing, enter that number here _____. This is your dose to be used twice a day.

Notes:
*Be sure your pH and alk are within normal reef limits before starting. Adjust if needed. Monitor weekly.
*Shoot for a ppm of around 5 or lower if only dosing for improved coral growth, coloration, and spread, also for better health/coloration of your fish. Shoot for higher amounts up to 30 ppm if you are having melting zoas or closed zoas and look for the causes of your problems as you dose. Higher doses of as much as 100ppm (for about 2 weeks) for fish illness. Check for high nitrates, pests, zoa pox, predators, and unstable water conditions.
*Dose low amounts and increase the amount slowly over the course of a few days to a couple weeks.
* If you notice an algae bloom (white stringy stuff) or increased scum on your glass then cut back by half until it disappears.
* Watch your skimmer, it will start to skim more.
* Dose the amount twice a day in a fast moving area of your sump or overflow. You may dilute the vitamin c in ro/di water then pour into overflow. If adding to sump, try and add the vitamin c after filtration such as skimmers and reactors. *Keep your Vitamin C bottle in the refrigerator. * If you have a question, ask here. I do my best to check these threads daily.
* The instructions in this guide and throughout this thread are based on using pure Sodium Ascorbate, not vitamin c pills and other non-buffered forms of vitamin c.

Be sure to take some "before" pics!

After 3 days of treatment, every single spot is gone from an infested fish. I'm going to try this on my prize goldfish, who has some sort of weird fungal problem on his head.

Interesting info about those white spots on my GF:

In general, these white fuzzy stuffs are excess fatty issue that they stored for winter as they will not be eating in cold weather outdoor when the water temperature is below 50 degree in winter. But when spring comes the water starts warming up so they try to get rid of this excessive stuff by oozing them out the head. I keep the fish in a tank with constant temperature but the fish is just acting as in a natural environment.

I'm so glad he's not sick!

Well I just noticed my purple tang has ich and would it hurt any corals or inverts if I used the vitamin c to treat in my display tank.

I know it would be better to put him in "hospital" tank to treat but my main problem would be getting him out, and is the chart

just for the product you listed or can I be lazy and just get a bottle of marine c, vita-chem or vitamarin-c since I'm ordering from

Dr. Foster and Smith and would get the free shipping because honestly I dont understand the chart you have made up? Sorry I

confuse easy on some things. BTW all the other fish are showing no signs of ich..........YET:pray2:

I think it would be safe to treat the whole tank with vitamin c...it'll help the other fish and corals also. When are you placing the order, I might add something if it's ok.

Sure no prob I already have enough stuff for the free shipping so you can add something if you want, I will be

ordering in the next week. Now what I need to know what would be the best of the 3 products I listed because

I'm not to sure about those pills and would have to get too much of it to get the free shipping from them.

Now from my experience with vit c is its not a mirical worker and some fish respond better then others. It doesnt kill ich but ich usually only host on weak stressed fish. Vitamin c is like garlic only stronger it builds immune systems just like in humans helps fight it off faster. Definitly worth a try if used right perfectly safe for everything and benifical too but the ich will still be in system so if u add a new fish and it gets stressed it will get ich. Ive seen tanks with ich for over a year and not one fish died usually not ich but marine velvet if fish r dropping like flies
