I'm going to upgrade my biocube 29 to led. I have decent electrical knowledge so I'm going to do a DIY when I get the gist of what I need to do it. I was wondering how many LEDs Do I need? What size or watt should they be? And any other helpful information would be greatly appreciated.

First of all do not go with watts as a measure of brightness.

I prefer the Cree X series over the cheaper Bridgelux Knockoffs as the Cree is much brighter and for the most part is full spectrum.

This LED Mix seems to work well driven at 700mA

10 Cree XT-E Cool White
11 Cree XT-E Royal Blue
4 Cree XP-E Blue

You can add a couple Red or UV to taste

I went with the RapidLED DIY solderless kit for my 29g oceanic biocube. I love the way it looks. Vince from RapidLED amazingly helpful, and helped with my color ratio choices. If you decide RapidLED is what you want to do, let me know and I'll ask vince for a 10% off coupon.

I used the ecoxotic led strips for my biocube 29 and I think it is great. It was super easy and cheaper than other solutions. You should look into it.
