UV Filter?

Hi Everyone,
I have read on some other forums about some people who use UV Filters on their reef tanks. I thought you weren't supposed to use UV Sterilizers on a reef tank....but I am reading mixed information on it. Who here uses them on their reef tank and what are the benefits? Who doesn't use them on their reef tank and why? I am just wanting some feedback on the subject.

Thanks!

I have the JBJ nanozap 3 watt and I don't know if it is doing anything, but I think my water got a better polish when I added it. Hasn't done anything to control algae though.

A UV sterilier isn't on the required list for a reef tank. It can be helpful to add if there is a lot of nuisance algae growth, or if there is a possibility of a parasite in the water.

The downfalls, though, are numerous for a reef tank. They do kill pods and plankton that go through them, and they also slow down spawning of corals and snails and other things.

For huge tanks, I can see a positive. For FOWLR, I think it's on the list of preferred equipment.
