Water temperature Help!!!

Hello everyone am confused with all the research I have done on aquarium temperature my temp is at 85f they say late 70 to early 80f so what truly is it ? Here is what I read from reef 101


Temperature

The temperature in a reef tank should be between 76-84 degrees Fahrenheit. I run my reef tank at around 80-82 degrees. I recommend running on the warmer side because it slows the metabolism of your corals allowing them to grow faster. Most coral reefs where our corals come from have a temperature between 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit.

I run my jbj 28 LEDs tank at 78 deg always had good results with other nano tank at the same temp.

I run my tank at 77.5 but it can get up to 80 during the day in the summer. I just checked out reef101.com if that's the site you're talking about. Pretty bad site.

To add to Gunner's link, you'll find most SPS reefs at 78-81. Some people let theirs get up to 83 or even a little higher during the summer. The more forgiving the livestock the higher the temperature can go.

Is your house air conditioned? Is your tank in a basement? Do you have LEDs, halides, or t5s? You'll probably need to answer these questions before anyone can answer yours.

I have ac, a basement tank, and LEDs, so I don't need a chiller.

It's an enclosed cube with an HQI hood. He needs a chiller. Rico, you need a chiller.

Where will the heat from the chiller be expelled? It may be useless if it is heating up the same area you are trying to cool.

I switched to LEDs years ago because of heat issues.

FWIW, I keep my tank at 78.

If you don't switch to a led hood a chiller is a must I had a aquapod24 with a 150 watt mh sun pod over the tank with cooling fans on the back of the tank and it didn't lower it that much.I bought a chiller problem solved tank was a steady 78 deg

Hello gunner yes I live in a bsmt no ac but its pretty chill I have metal halides I've herd people use fans to keep thers cool but dont know about the halides thet get really hot I faced my power heads to the surface hopefully it will bring the temperature down a bit till I find a fix for it

You can keep your tank mid 80's. I heard it will help SPS grow faster. The only problem I see is when you add corals coming from lower temp tanks, especially SPS, They may not acclimate good to your temp and die.

Experiment to find your heat sources. Mine was a return pump!

Fans are surprisingly effective. In particular for evaporative cooling, but be prepared to support with top off.

A chiller may be needed for your set up, but maybe not

I moved my sump to a 60 something degree basement and use a heater with a controller to keep the DT between 78-79.

I have a 6" clip on fan going across the sump of my 90g, with 6 T5s. No sump on the 40g, have a fan clipped on the edge of the tank going across the surface of the water, with a MG lamp & 2 CP bulbs.

FWIW, I've read in several places that the avg temp in shallower waters where the acros are is 84

The reason people don't run at 80+ (whether they know it or not) is because the higher temps in our enclosed ecosystems will lower O2 levels. So in nature, the temps are much higher than our tanks can manage while staying healthy. My tank floats between 78-81 now that I'm running halides again.

Regardless of where the heat is expelled, it will be wicked from the water at a far greater pace than it will re-heat the water through convection.

Unfortunately everyone's recommendations for a fan would be fantastic, except for the fact that this is an enclosed nanocube HQI. JBJ designed the stand and tank for the HQI entirely around the use of a chiller.
