What the crap just happened?

So, my pH was about 7.9 after a couple of days of running my system. I then tested my calcium and alk levels to make sure they were good. Cal was 420, and alk was 8. I usually run at 500 and 9-10 alk, so I went to brs (I use their 2 part) and added what was required (not a full dose for alk since it would raise it too quickly), and my pH dropped to 5.6!!! I'm still cycling, so there's no livestock, but wtf just happened? I mixed everything according to instructions, and since when does adding soda ash REDUCE pH????

And, this can't be a resurgence of the toxins, because my system's been running solid with steady pH, and was just dosing to keep my levels up!!

Ok, this thread can be deleted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My pH is 8.2, double tested to be sure.

MY pH PROBE IS CRACKED!!! I wish I had seen this before I put it back in the tank......

Iiiii'mmmmmm dumb

There is no need to supplement water when cycling or there is nothing consuming those minerals. STOP and let things balance out. 420 cal/ 8 is perfectly acceptable and NSW.

My rock is already alive and has coralline algae on it. My water and sand is needing to re-cycle. My calc levels had dropped from 480 to 420 since Friday.

STOP dosing! you are just wasting money and screwing up your tank as it's trying to find it's equilibrium.

+1 Eric...while a tank is cycling, the parameters are going to be all over the place, so no need to add anything right now.
