Can anybody talk me through how to frag a Xenia? I have a Xenia taking over my tank and was told that if I just rip it out or cut it, that it could release some toxins into my tank. If anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it. Ill even give you as much as you want for helping me. Thanks in advance.

I use a razor blade to cut them right at the base off of the rock. I damn near cut a fine layer off the rock to remove the stalk. I have a scalpel set which works perfectly.

Make sure you get it all --- it will come back.

In the loft/office at home, the GF works from home and loves the stuff, so it stays.

What size is the tank? big enough to get a fish who likes to eat sofites?

I would peel it off at the base if possible. I use a wood bbq skewer and pry the stalk off. The other thing you can do is cut as close as possible to the rock and then scrub the area with something firm. Run some extra carbon afterwards. GL

I was a pre-medicine major sudden in college, so I had a few scalpels lying around...but I believe you can find them, or something similar at hobby lobby...in the arts & crafts section.

Well I used to do models when I was younger, now I feel like an idiot for not thinking of an exacto knife.

Wow. That's a LOT of xenia. You can harvest a lot during water changes....give it a nudge at the base (attachment point) to dislodge and let the water flow take it out the rest of the way. I have cut it in the past and saw something milky released into the water. Not sure what it releases and whether it's toxic...no adverse affects I'm aware of.

I had a bunch, and still have a bunch, i used a scalpel at one point to scrape it off the rocks from the base, taking some of the rock with it. As you scrape it keep it in the tank, it slimes more if taken out of the water. I would use a turkey baster to suck it up and toss it into a cup. If you let the little pieces float away they will grow all over your tank. Don't leave any of the flesh behind or it will regenerate. Then flush it. All my sps and fish were fine. I do use carbon in my tank.
