Yellow Watchman Goby

Hey guys,
I just recently added a YWG to my tank and I am curious as to its behavioral patterns. Because it's not the typical fish that swims back and forth I find myself going "OH GOD ITS DEAD!" like 5 times a day. It's something I'm learning to get used to and was curious if there's anything they do that would normally seem weird but for a YWG is normal. For example, its been hanging out on my back wall at the very top by the return water for like a day. Normal? Not normal?

If its laying on its back on the sand for any extended period of time (optionally getting a really rough massage from your cuc), that's not normal.

Did you set it up a little burrow to call home?

There's a cave and a couple nooks in my tank that I've seen him hanging out in. It's eating fine but how often should they be fed? My other fish eat every other day...

I can't tell why he's hanging out so close to the top. I figure he likes the flow from the return? Would a pic help?

My clown would NOT butt out of the picture!

I've had a YWG for at least 5 years in a 30 gallon tank. I originally had a coral substrate and when I switched to live sand he turned white for about 2 years and then he turned yellow again. He is always under his rock, only coming out when he thinks its time to be fed, even then he is never more than 3 inches off of the sand.

get him a pisto shrimp, they will pair up and keep each other company..
but they will dig up the sand and make the rocks fall..

mine did that exact same thing for about a week and a half to two weeks and finally settled in a cave down below... weird little guys

Glad to hear it! I will keep an eye on him and hopefully he chills out at some point. I need to get that algae off the wall also.

How will you do it? I have that on my back wall too..couple days ago I used the razor to clean it a bit but the algae blew back in my tank..
you must turn off the flow and the filter to keep it stays in place and syphon it out...
or if you have any trick..please share...

no mine has never attempted to jump

@ christina is anyone picking on? i know when i added my blue eyed tang to my tank he was all over the place kinda stressed out! But I do have to say they are extremely hardy as he made it through a couple of crashes!!

but they are a jumper..my jumped out by a small hole then I cought him and put him back, second time he killed himself on the glass top..

The clown was a little nippy at first but not so much anymore. I wonder if he likes the heat coming off of my LED setup?

Are these jumpers?

I haven't noticed jumping but as soon as my moonlights go out for the night he starts shooting around the tank and slamming off the glass until he rests on the bottom. It's definitely alarming...I think they're kind of mellow until they spook and then they are really erratic.

I'm a little concerned about how thin this fish is...He was like that when he came in to MCF but how thin should they be? When I feed the tank with the pellets he eats only like 2 of them...and only if they float practically directly into his mouth. How much should they be eating and how aggressively do they go for food? Are these skinny fish?

Try having a routine for feeding. Maybe try feed much less but more often. How about different foods? Do u leave the powerhead on? My blenny or goby won't pick food from the top. They chase it. Good luck. My goby would eat the coral food straight out the turkey baster.

I feed every other day in the morning...around 9 or 10am...I generally let the powerhead blow it around but for the Goby I put the pellets in and then I whack them with my finger and they sink..which has worked out. But how much would you anticipate they eat? Maybe it's skinny because it's young?

try feeding other foods. I have a YWG and he usually is the last one to eat. Doesn't care for pellets. He does eat flakes, rod's, and mysis. He goes thru periods where he is skinny then fat. Sometimes I won't see him for a couple of days but when he gets hungry, he is out chasing the flakes. Give him some time.
