14 Gallon Biocube Filtration?

Well, I recently picked up a biocube and I am wondering whats the best way to configure the filtration chambers. As of now I have 20 lbs of live sand, 15 pounds of live rock, and 15 pounds of base rock. As far as livestock goes, I have a Seahorse and a yellow watchmen/pistol shrimp pair. Corals consist of some gsp, daisy polyps, mushrooms, zoas, xenia, and a small toadstool. In the first chamber is a heater and a biocube skimmer. 2nd chamber is empty. Only filter floss at the top. 3rd chamber obviously is the return pump and purigen. I am sure there is a much better way to go about this. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have mine setup about the same way you do, minus the skimmer. I've found that the floss and a little bag of media is all these tanks need. Occasional water change and topoff for maintenance.

Nah, the floss is plenty to catch particles, and way cheaper to replace as needed. If you got the skimmer might as well use it, better than nothing but not necessary if you were to go out and buy it separate.

If I gut my stock hood and put in a led kit, you can have mine, but it's not exactly at the top of my todo list right now.

That's a LOT of live rock and live sand for a 14G BioCube.

Some people put a refugium in the middle chamber. Oceanic started putting a little window in the back of the middle chamber as a courtesy to all of the people who wanted to use that chamber as a refugium. JBJ makes an LED light fixture that mounts right up to the window for easy use. It's a ridiculously overpriced IMO though...

I will look in my box o parts and see if I have a PS. I tried the skimmer in my 14 and it just not a feasable unit to use. George is spot on with his advise. That stock return pump is ok but a MJ900 is better. I tried the UV sterilizer in it too and didnt see much of a difference. What I did was to use a dremmel on a bare filter cartridge to remove the extra plastic and what not then I just cut a piece of bulk floss and used a rubberband to keep it in place... I have a picture somewhere. I just got a container of carbon and used the small media tie string bags from petco and tossed one in. You either have to put a tiny heater in chamber 1 next to the filter cartridge or inside the tank, not enough water passes in the other two to keep it submerged.

That would be great Jeff! I do have the Mj900 in it already. Sounds like I'm pretty much good to go as is then. Just felt like it was missing something. The skimmer is kind of a pita. Might just pull it out, and Jason, I have to agree. That is pretty expensive. Thanks for the advice guys.

Filterfloss, purigen and chemipure elite finally got my level's stable in my 28. I also run a small skimmer, but that is all I currently use and finally have gotten to 1 week for glass cleaning and only needing 20% water changes. I have a pretty heavy Bioload though. I would also say since you have almost two to three times the amount of rock lb's per gallon that I have, your natural biological filtration will be very good.

That's a good idea. More cost effective I'm sure. Really, You found it? That's awesome! I could pick it up if that's easier?
