Ok here are my thoughts on vinyl tubing. Ditch it as soon as possible. While you can have a very successful reef aquarium with this type of plumbing in the long run it may lead to problems ie algae growth, kinked hoses which could cause a flood.
How can hose cause algae problems?
As for hose causing algae, I've heard when using clear hose that light might grow algae in clear hose then possibly causing a clog. But I'm using black vital hose and working good for me.
I've used clear braided vinyl from BRS for my return and drain hoses and my fuge light is on 24 hours. I've never had any issue growing in either.
I know it isn't the most professional looking but it is easy and I change it every couple years when it gets too hard from the salt water but that only takes about 5 min. Is there a good check valve I can use, using this material?
